Resume/Cover Letter Formatting Tips
As with any document transmitted over the Internet, minor formatting errors may occur. DULink uses PDF technology.
- It is recommended that you use common fonts such as Times Roman or Arial to ensure that resumes print correctly for all employers. Font effects such as outlines and shadows may cause even simple fonts to convert improperly.
- One-inch margins are recommended. If your original document has small margins, the conversion might cause words to wrap and throw off the formatting.
- Use left-justification instead of full-justification which can also affect the formatting of your resume/cover letter.
- Avoid the three Ts: Templates, Text boxes, or Tables in your resume since they may not display correctly. To preview a resume to ensure proper formatting click on the resume or cover letter title in “Documents.”
- If you see unintentional symbols in your preview, it may be that you need to try a new font. Change the font in your original document, and then re-save and re-upload the file. This is also true if you use certain bullets in your resume.
If you upload your resume/cover letter, and the first page is blank it may be a formatting issue in Microsoft Word. To fix the error, try these two options:
1. Open up your document in Word and Go to File > Page Setup. Click on the Layout tab. Make sure Section Start is set at New Page or Continuous. Click on the OK button.
2. Go to Insert > Page Numbers. Click on the Format button. Make sure the Page Numbering is set at Continue from Previous Section or Start at Page 1. Click the OK button. On the Page Numbers window, uncheck the box that reads, "Show number on first page." Click on the OK button.
How to Avoid Conversion Issues
1. Do not encrypt files or use password protection, locks, macros, frames, or tables.
2. Do not force your margins. A minimum margin of three-quarters of an inch is recommended. Do not use landscape orientation.
3. Use a common font, not one with an unusual type face. Examples of common fonts are Arial, Garamond, and Times New Roman.
4. Indents should be preset. Do not use the space bar or multiple tabs for spacing.
5. Use Microsoft word Version 5.0 or higher for best results.
6. Do not use headers or footers.
7. Do not use page breaks.
8. Avoid extremely long file names such as My_Second_Cover_Letter_For_Denison_Univeristy_for_Fall_2013.
9. Your resume should be limited to one page. If your resume is longer than one page, it must not exceed the maximum file upload size of 200KB.
10. If a file does not upload properly, convert it to PDF first and upload the PDF file directly.
For the most accurate PDF conversion from MS Word 2007, we recommend that students use the provided Microsoft plug-in. The plug-in is available through http://www.microsoft.com/downloads. Search for "pdf add-in." Macs already have built-in PDF conversion capabilities and do not require any additional software.
