Externship Logo

The ExternsEverywhere program connects students with alumni and friends of Denison for job-shadow experiences (aka. Externships). These externships help students choose their career path by providing invaluable insight into the “real world”. Students are able to network with and shadow successful professionals at reputable companies, in highly-desirable cities, and within many industries including; sales, finance, legal, marketing, public relations, medical, consulting, non-profit, fine arts, education and many more.

Externship Benefits

  • Develop a professional network – Add your externship host and other professionals to your network. These contacts may be able to provide ongoing mentorship and connect you with future internships or full-time job opportunities.
  • Increased confidence in career choice – Gain a better idea of your area of study, skills, interests, values and how they all relate to a career.
  • No long-term commitment – Receive valuable insight into a particular industry in as little as one day!
  • Establish goals for the future – Externships often convert to internships, which often convert to jobs

FAQ

What is the difference between an internship and externship?

  • An externship is a short-term opportunity, which typically lasts one to two days while internships vary in length and last for longer periods of time. Unlike some internships, externships do not offer pay or academic credit.

Can I arrange an externship on my own with a Denison alum or friend?

  • Yes! If you find someone open to hosting an externship experience for you, please tell us about it and/or refer your host to Zach Pavol;  pavolz@denison.edu or call 740-587-6656
  • If you have already completed an externship, please let our office know about it by completing a brief form

Is housing/transportation provided?

  • No. It is important to consider geographic location. Most students choose externships close to their hometown or Denison’s campus. While most externships only last one day, it is the student’s responsibility to arrange housing and transportation and cover any related expenses.

How did your externship help with your career development?

“I met with one of the managers in charge of hiring new people and he gave me a rundown of what they look for in a resume and in interviews, which was helpful. Also, I got to sit in on a meeting with an investment manager from Boston.”

“I gained a clear understanding of the amount of work that goes into a program officer’s work in the areas of sustainability and community development.”
