Denison Internship Program

DIP 2012

Now in its 22nd year, the Denison Internship Program (formerly called "May Term") provides students with the opportunity to explore career fields of interest and apply their academic coursework to the world of work. Every December Career Exploration & Development publishes an internship catalog that outlines the internship program, lists "Denison Exclusive" & national internship opportunities and contains sample resumes and cover letters. Students are also welcome to arrange/design internships on their own. Please contact Career Exploration & Development with any questions or for more information.

If you are an employer or a Denison Alum who would like to sponsor an internship, please click here!

How the Internship Program Works

The internship involves the student, the professional supervisor, and the office of Career Exploration & Development. The Assistant Director for Career Exploration & Development, Ashley Strausser, administers the internship program by assisting the intern and professional supervisor with details and information regarding the internship registration and evaluation process. The intern and/or professional supervisor should contact the office of Career Exploration & Development immediately if concerns with the internship develop.

While no academic credit is involved, students should register the internship with Career Exploration & Development so that it will be recorded on his/her transcript. The requirement for this is that the internship be sponsored by Career Exploration & Development either as a catalog internship or independently arranged with approval by Career Exploration & Development. Further, the on-site supervisor must formally indicate satisfactory performance upon completion of the internship.

Internship Supervisor Expectations

  1. Provide the intern with a challenging and meaningful learning experience that will promote his/her professional development.
  2. Familiarize the intern to the philosophy, policies, programs and services of the organization.
  3. Define the organization's expectations of the intern.
  4. Mentor, supervise and provide adequate training in addition to helping the intern explore the profession and evaluate his/her potential for success in it.
  5. Integrate the intern as a functioning participant in appropriate levels of organizational activities, projects and programs. A specific project could be undertaken and evaluated.
  6. Submit an evaluation of the intern's work at the end of the term. This evaluation is the basis for recording satisfactory completion of the Denison internship on the student's transcript.

Denison Intern Expectations

  1. Complete a minimum of 100 hours (3 weeks) and conduct yourself in an ethical and professional manner, acting as a positive representative of Denison University.
  2. Become familiar with organization policy and procedures and abide by all regulations.
  3. Fulfill tasks and responsibilities assigned by your site supervisor.
  4. Be alert for ways to maximize your experience and develop your professional skill set. Share with your supervisor what you hope to learn (refer to Learning Agreement Form) and express a desire to experience a broad range of activities characteristic of the career field.
  5. Set a positive standard for other interns to follow.
  6. Notify Career Exploration & Development immediately if any problems develop.
  7. Complete a Self Evaluation of your internship experience, which Career Exploration & Development will email to you. The evaluation should be discussed in detail with the professional supervisor. This evaluation will serve as a reference for that internship site for future interns.
  8. Understand that arrangements and costs of travel, room and board are your personal responsibility.

Housing Information

A Denison University residence hall with limited kitchen facilities is available during the summer for local internship responsibilities.

The deadline for applying for summer housing at Denison is typically mid-April. Students must apply for housing by contacting the Office of Campus and Residential Life. Housing is provided on a first come first serve basis. Having an internship in the Licking County/Columbus metro area does not guarantee housing on campus. Students must apply by the deadline.

In order to assist with other housing concerns, click on the pdf document below for a list of useful summer housing websites.

"My Internship gave me a broad idea for all aspects of the business world. I obtained information about sales, marketing, research analysis, and verbal and written communication skills. The strength of this internship was that it was very well rounded. I was never doing the same type of activity for more than a few days at a time."

"My internship was a wonderful learning experience. I was able to apply and recognize many of the terms and theories I had learned in class in the work I was doing. I was involved and active in the daily activities of the organization. I was also given a lot of freedom to conduct interviews and make observations on my own time. I feel like what I learned in the classroom at Denison came to life in this setting."

~Becca Keiser '10, Intern with the Center for Organizational Reform, Spokane, Washington

"Summer internships are one of the best experiences a student can pursue. On its most basic level, it's a resume builder that looks great to future employers and schools. But it's also more than that. Internships are an opportunity to continue your education, get some experience in an area you might end up pursuing as a career, and ultimately learn about yourself and your interests."

~John Burzinski '09, Minnesota ACLU, St. Paul, Minnesota

"The Denison Internship Program at Lacaster Pollard has a long history of success. Out of it has come some very valuable projects, as well as many extremely valuable employees."

~Nick Gesue, Lancaster Pollard, Columbus, Ohio

Denison is very fortunate to be able to offer stipends to students completing UNPAID internships because of generous alumni and organizational donations.  Applications for the Summer 2012 stipends will be available in Career Exploration & Development and are due on Monday, March 5, 2012 by 4:30pm. NO LATE APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Students are asked to write an essay describing the internship(s) to which they are applying (or at least the career field they wish to explore), and provide a current resume. Please contact Career Exploration & Development for details.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who can apply for a stipend? All first years, sophomores, and juniors planning to complete an UNPAID internship are encouraged to apply.

How much funding can I receive? It depends on the total number of hours you complete during your internship. Students completing an internship totaling a minimum of 100 hours can apply for a $500 stipend. Students completing an internship totaling a minimum of 200 hours can apply for a $1250 stipend and students completing an internship of at least 300 hours are eligible to apply for a $2500 stipend.

What if I do not know how many hours in total I will be interning this summer? Many internship sites offer a great deal of flexibility and are willing to work with you to find a schedule that works best for both parties. When it comes to determining your total number of hours and ultimately the amount of funding for which you apply, we would encourage you to think about the number of hours you hope to complete. If you know you want to work full-time for the better part of the summer, then you should apply for $2500. If you plan to intern 10-15 hours/week for 10 weeks, so you can also work part-time, then you should apply for a $500 stipend.

Is there a cap on the amount of funding I can receive from Career Exploration & Development? Yes, the maximum stipend amount you can receive from Career Exploration & Development during your time at Denison is $2500.

What if I have not secured an internship by the stipend application deadline? You do not have to have an internship secured in order to apply for stipend funding.

Can I receive a stipend from Career Exploration & Development as well as from another source? If you are participating in summer research and receiving the $3800 research grant, or you receive the McMahon or Lilly Stipend ($3300), you are NOT eligible to receive an additional stipend from Career Exploration & Development.

Can I use stipend funding to cover my costs for participating in a fee-based internship program? Stipends cannot be used to cover administrative charges for fee-based internship programs.

When is the deadline to apply for a stipend? March 5, 2012 at 4:30pm. No late applications will be accepted!

How and when will I find out if I have received a stipend? All applicants will receive an award notification letter in their Slayter box by mid-April.

Are stipends competitive? Yes, generally 60-65% of the students who apply, actually receive a stipend.

What can I do to help improve my chances of receiving a stipend? Many students share that the only way they will be able to complete an unpaid internship is if they receive a stipend. Our advice to stipend applicants is to attend one of our Stipend Workshops in February and to have your essay reviewed by a staff member is CE&D prior to submitting your application. Students should avoid waiting until the last minute to begin their application. Good essays require time and reflection.

What must I do to receive my stipend money, if awarded? All stipend recipients must:
  1. Complete the Internship Registration Form
  2. Have their supervisor submit the Independently Arranged Form (not applicable for students completing Catalog internships)
  3. Submit a letter from your supervisor on company letterhead that includes: confirmation the internship is unpaid, internship start date, end date, hours/week and total number of agreed upon hours the intern will complete
  4. Receive a satisfactory performance evaluation from your supervisor
  5. Write a thank you note to your stipend donor

How long will it take for me to receive my stipend once all of my paperwork is complete? Generally 2-3 weeks.

Is there a deadline by which all of my stipend paperwork must be received? Yes, July 6, 2012. If all of your required stipend paperwork has not been submitted by this date, your stipend will be forfeited and the funding will be used by students placed on the Alternate list.
