Denison Career Network

Career Network

You'll be amazed at how supportive Denison alumni are in sharing their advice and expertise! The Denison University Career Network is a resource of alumni that helps students and other alumni with career related information and advice. Networking information can be exchanged regarding careers, educational backgrounds, organizations, and other career interests.

How Denison Career Network works:

  1. Alumni who would like to share their experience and advice can log in to www.denison.edu/careernetwork using the "D number" that appears above their name on the Denison Magazine mailing label.
  2. Create a profile which includes information such as professional achievements, interests, and activities.
  3. Once your profile is completed, you will be able to network with alumni and current students.

HOW TO CONTACT ALUMNI

Students can contact alumni by sending a letter or emailing them if email is available. You won't see the alum's email address (there is a pop us window where you can type in the message) and submit the email to the alum. If the alum responds via email back to you, only then will you see the alum's email address. This is called a blind email system.

If a Business Phone Number is listed, you may call and leave a brief, professional, message introducing yourself and the reason you are calling the alum.

Do not call alums repeatedly or weekly. If the alum wishes to return your phone call, they will!

For graduating seniors (2010), you are encouraged to update your Profile once you have secured employment or admission to a graduate/professional school or know your plans after graduation. You will be able to provide advice to other students as well as search the network for other alums. Graduating seniors are encouraged to complete their Profile Spring semester, 2010 or after graduation.

SUGGESTED QUESTIONS TO ASK ALUMNI

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE PERSON'S POSITION AND CAREER:

How did you become interested in your field?

What are your major responsibilities?

What do you like and dislike about your work?

Do you work independently or with other people?

Does your work allow you to have the amount and type of leisure time you desire?

What is a typical work day like for you?

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE OCCUPATIONAL FIELD:

What are the entry-level positions in your field? Salary range?

What background (education, training, experience) is required?

What related jobs are available in your field?

What is the occupational outlook for the field?

Is there more than one way to prepare for this occupation?

Can you suggest the names of other people with whom I could speak?

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:

How would you describe the organizational structure?

How would you describe the working environment?

What are the major pros and cons in working with this particular organization?

For complete instructions, review the FAQ section on the Denison Career Network site.

If you have questions, please contact Career Services at 740-587-6656 or via email at career@denison.edu. Our office is located in 306 Burton Morgan Center and we can demonstrate the Denison Career Network system to you as well.

The Devereux Foundation offers a full-year training program to recent college graduates interested in psychology, social work, counseling, and/or special education. This would be an ideal opportunity for your current seniors or recent alumni who want to solidify their research and clinical interests through hands-on experience for a year before applying to graduate school.

We received feedback in response to our mailing last year that the information would be easier for career centers to distribute if it were provided electronically. For that reason, we would like to provide you with a link to our website:

http://ppt.DevereuxICTR.org

Please feel free to cut and paste any material from our website into an e-mail blast to your students/alumni, send to your psychology department chair, or to place the material into your searchable job database. Unfortunately, as a small not-profit organization, we do not have the resources to manually enter the information into individual college databases, and cannot attend any career fairs or on-campus interviews. Applications for the position will be reviewed on a rolling bases through February 1, 2008.

Kenan-Lewis Internships
APPLICATION DEADLINE IS JANUARY 1, 2008.

Exciting Opportunities for College Graduates Interested in Boarding School Teaching
We invite recent college graduates interested in working in an independent boarding school environment to apply for a Kenan-Lewis Internship at Woodberry Forest School, a boarding school for 400 boys in grades 9 through 12 located on 1200 scenic acres in Madison County, Va. The goal of the program is to help interns develop the skills required of boarding school teachers while introducing them to all aspects of school life. Woodberry employs two interns annually for one-year appointments as full-time faculty members.

Each Kenan-Lewis intern receives guidance from an experienced faculty member, observes classes, teaches at least one class independently, and explores professional development opportunities. Interns are expected to participate in the extracurricular life of the school through coaching or other duties during each of the three academic terms of their internship. They also assist in the supervision of dormitory life.
Kenan-Lewis interns teach in one of the following academic areas, depending on Woodberry's needs each year: the Arts, Biology, Chemistry, Chinese, English, French, History, Latin, Mathematics, Physics, Religion, and Spanish. Each internship carries a salary of $24,000 plus living quarters, meals in the school dining room, and health care benefits.

We accept applications from college seniors and recent graduates for the upcoming academic year's Kenan-Lewis Internships until January 1. Candidates chosen to interview at Woodberry will be notified by March 1. Applicants should send a cover letter; a resume indicating their previous education, employment, athletic experience, and interests; their college transcript; and three letters of recommendation to:

Greetings Senior,

It's Career Fair Week!

Now is a great time to begin, or continue, to explore your post-Denison options! The next three weeks are full of events, application deadlines and employer and grad school visits to Denison. What are you waiting for? Remember, you can do it, we can help!

30 employers, with jobs, will visit Denison this Wednesday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. in Slayter. These employers do not have to come to Denison, they choose to. They want to speak to you, because they are confident in your skills and abilities and how you can help their organization. Opportunities in Non-Profits, Government Agencies, Consulting, Research, Human Resources, Media, Healthcare, and Finance will be available. Dress to impress and bring multiple copies of your resume.

And...you'll have another opportunity to network with the employers from 4:15 to 5:00 in the Welsh Hills Room of the Burton D. Morgan Center. Join us for this informal event to continue conversations and explore opportunities.

Then, on Thursday, nearly 75 Graduate and Professional Schools will be in Slayter from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Again, they do not have to come to Denison, they choose to come to Denison and are also confident that you have the knowledge and skills to provide valuable perspective to their programs. Greetings Senior,

Ahhh…Thanksgiving Break: relaxation, turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie… and the dreaded question from everyone in your family: So, what are you going to do after you graduate??

Unsure how to answer that? Be honest, but don't take the easy way out and say 'I have no idea.' Chances are you have an idea, but are not sure how to refine, articulate and pursue your idea.
Normally family members and friends ask because they are concerned and want to help. Put them to work for you by sharing your ideas and see what advice they have to offer and if they know someone who could also give you some additional advice and insight. They can be great resources for you and as always, Career Services is here to help you refine and develop your strategy. Enjoy your break!

Subject: Progressive Campaign Job Opportunities Nationwide
We made history last fall. Young people turned out in record numbers to vote and to volunteer and to make the change that we believe in. Now we have to take our place in history, alongside President Obama and the expanded majorities in the House and Senate. Hope is only the beginning; it's time to work for the change we need.
It is critical that we continue to focus on issues of civil liberties, women's rights, and poverty and hold the candidates we have worked to elect accountable to the promises they made during their campaigns. Grassroots Campaigns, Inc. has joined forces with the American Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International, and Save the Children allowing us to actively work towards ensuring a more progressive future and holding our officials accountable. There is no better time or place to get involved and help create the new generation that will take this country in a more progressive direction.

Announcement of AmericorpsVISTA openings:

Over the last six months, representatives of the service-learning and community access programs at Central Ohio Technical College (COTC), Denison, and the Ohio State University at Newark (OSUN) have worked with a local college access program, A CALL TO COLLEGE (ACTC), to lay the groundwork for an innovative consortium to raise college awareness, readiness, and attendance among young people in Newark, Ohio. Ohio Campus Compact (OCC) has granted this initiative three AmericorpsVISTA positions. Our vision is that the VISTAs for the three schools will work as a team, with ACTC's guidance, to develop and implement college access activities that utilize and integrate the resources of their respective institutions: service-learning classes, student organizations, student interns, and faculty support. This consortium, representing the spectrum of higher education institutional types, has unusual potential to develop, implement and assess imaginative programs to address one of the most pressing social issues of our times: low rates of participation in higher education among low-income, first generation-college youth. The VISTAs will work with children and teachers in the Newark City School District, with students and faculty from the three colleges, and with college access professionals at ACTC.

To read the three job descriptions, learn more about necessary qualifications, and view details about salary/benefits, please visit the following website and look for the job listings under COTC, Denison and OSUN: http://www.ohiocampuscompact.org/page.cfm?ID=10
Interested applicants are encouraged to apply by March 23 for full consideration. The goal is to fill the positions by early April.

Direct Action & Research Training (DART) Center will be on the Denison campus on Tue., April 7 @ 7PM in the Burton D. Morgan Center, Rm 216 to discuss careers in the field of community organizing, and to schedule interviews with students interested in empowering their communities and working for social change.

Please RSVP if you are interested by contacting Sunil Joy at sunil@thedartcenter.org or calling 785.841.2680 with your name, phone # and email address.

DART is now accepting applications for the 2009 DART Organizers Institute, the paid, four-month field school for people interested in launching a career in community organizing. Participants will undergo a combined classroom and field training covering such topics as:

-Entering a community
-Identifying and training local leaders
-Strategic planning and issue cutting
-Relationship and community building
-Direct Action on community issues
-Fundraising

The DART Center, has built coalitions throughout the country that have won important victories on a broad set of justice issues including:

-Education reform in low-performing public schools
-Job Training
-Drugs and Violence
-Criminal Recidivism
-Living Wage
-Neighborhood Revitalization
- Predatory Lending
-Affordable Housing, etc.

The DART Organizers Institute combines a 7-day classroom orientation with 15 weeks of infield training at a DART host organization. This is a paid training program that includes: a $7,000 living stipend, transportation to the classroom orientation and host city, and mileage reimbursement during the infield training. Room, board, and tuition will also be paid by DART during the 7-day classroom training. After successful completion of the program, DART will work to place graduates into permanent full time salaried positions ranging from ($27-30,000/year for Associate Organizers and $30-34,000 for Lead Organizers).

Graduates from the four month DART Organizers Institute have gone onto accept Executive Director and Associate Community Organizing positions throughout the country.

The 7-day classroom orientation and 15 week infield training starts July 12, 2009 and runs through November 7, 2009. Training locations will include placements in several states around the country.

Although it may be helpful, no direct experience is necessary. Organizer Trainees (OTs) hired to participate in the DART Organizers Institute must demonstrate a desire to pursue community organizing as a long-term professional career.
