Welcome to 2nd semester 2010
Instructions on how to register your computer: The Denison University Network Enabler (DUNE) is a step-by-step process that will connect your personal computer to Denison's Residential Network. Connecting to the campus network will allow you to access the Internet and utilize other campus resources such as myDenison, Blackboard, or your personal network storage space (the U: drive). http://bradfordreg.cc.denison.edu/registration/DUNE/
Instructions on how to register your Phones & Media Devices on Denison's network can be found at: http://bradfordreg.cc.denison.edu/registration/howto_phones.html

Microsoft Office software: Denison’s Microsoft contract allows students to install Microsoft Office on their personally-owned computers at no cost. Both Windows and Mac versions are available. The installation media is available for checkout at the Library.
ITS Help Desk Service: Need help with any of the above or other computing problems? Contact the ITS Help Desk by phone at 740.587.6395, by email at helpdesk@denison.edu, or visit us at either of our two locations. For hours and locations, please see the ITS Help Desk webpage.
The Student Support Annex: ITS has expanded personal computing support services for students. The Student Support Annex, located in 106 Fellows Hall and serviced through our main ITS Help Desk, provides more in-depth assistance for personal laptops. This assistance may include personal computer clean up, diagnosis of problems on personal laptops, re-installation of an operating system, help with software installation from our software center, virus removal, and assistance with backing up important files. Students with personal laptop computing problems may seek help by stopping by the Help Desk in 100 Fellows Hall or contacting the same at 740-587-6395 or helpdesk@denison.edu.
Blackboard 9
You must follow the steps below to make your course Available so that students can see the content:
Under CLASS MANAGEMENT (which is located in the column on the left side of an individual course page), expand the options for the Control Panel using the left options arrow.
Expand the option for "Customization."
Click the "Properties" link under the "Customization" option.
Under "Set Availability" (#3), click the "Yes" button for "Make Class Available".
Scroll to the top or bottom of the screen and click "Submit" to save your changes.
Note: These steps need to be made to each class you are teaching.
Copying Previous Course Material:
Go to your old course and click on "Packages and Utilities" under COURSE MANAGEMENT located in the lower left corner of the screen. Choose "Course Copy". Select "Copy Course Materials into an Existing Course". Then click on the Browse button next to "Course Destination ID". A new window will open and you will select the 2010 course you want the materials copied into and click "Submit". Next, from the list select the course materials, etc. and click "Submit". Copying old course material will add buttons to your 2010 course. You will need to clean up your new course by deleting buttons that are no longer needed. To do this, click on the small down arrows on the right side of the link or button and select "Delete".
Copying an individual folder or file from a Previous Course:
Go to your old course and navigate to the folder or file that you wish to copy into your 2010 course. Click on the down arrows to the right of the title of the folder or file and choose "Copy" in the menu. Choose the course destination (the new course) and then click on "Browse" to choose the area in which you want the file or folder located.
Courses Listed under "My Courses":
I want to apprise you of a bug that you may have experienced with Blackboard 9 that now appears to have a resolution:
Some faculty do not see all of their courses listed under the "My Courses" tab after they log into Blackboard. If you click on the small flower-like icon located in the upper right corner of the "My Courses" course listing, a screen will appear that lists all courses that you are both teaching and enrolled. Uncheck ALL check marks in ALL columns and choose "Submit." Click on the flower-like icon again and check the "Display Course Name" box of those courses that you wish to have listed under "My Courses". The unchecked courses will stay hidden, but can always be accessed if the "Display Course Name" box next to the course is checked again. The Spring 2010 courses begin with the prefix 1020S.
Creating an Announcements Tab:
If you do not like the "Homepage" screen, you can delete that screen and add an Announcements page to make it similar to the look we have always had in the past. To delete the Homepage, click on the down arrows to the right of the Homepage link found on the left hand side of your course and select "Delete" from the menu. To add an Announcement link & page, click on the white plus sign above the links and select "Create Tool Link". A new window will open and you should type "Announcements" in the open field, leave "Type" as Announcement and check the "Available to Users" box and then select "Submit".
FireFox
If you have problems viewing a .pdf document when using the Firefox 3 browser, the Help Desk can assist you in changing a setting that will allow for you to view these documents. The Help Desk number is x6395 or helpdesk@denison.edu or refer to the Denison FAQ's that can be found at http://www.denison.edu/offices/computing/support/training/documentation.html
In addition, compatibility issues exist between Firefox 3.5 and Internet Explorer 8 browsers and Blackboard. If you experience problems, try using an alternate browser. Please contact the Help Desk at x6395 if you have questions or experience problems with Blackboard.
