Our LAN (Local Area Network)
Our local area network (LAN) is a Novell computer network, which provides a way to safely save, store and share your files with others.
Our Novell network offers each member of the Denison community a folder to store his or her files. The folder is available wherever that person logs into the LAN. By default, each account holder receives 100MB of disk space. The folder is located on the U: drive. Mac users will see this drive mounted on their desktop as Personal Workspace.
This personal storage space provides:
- Mobility: Personal storage folders are available wherever the person authenticates to the LAN (i.e. labs, offices, eclassrooms, etc...).
- Security: Access to personal storage folders (U: drive) requires password authentication to the LAN.
- Backup: All data files residing on the LAN are backed up on a nightly basis using a high capacity data archival system. Tapes from this system are then moved to a safe for added protection.
Our Novell network also provides a way to share files and folders with other members of your department or organization, across departments, or with students in a class. There are three areas for sharing:
- The S: drive is the primary area for sharing. Mac users will see this drive mounted on their desktop as Shared Workspaces.
- The M: drive is the area for sharing large files such as video clips. Mac users will see this drive mounted on their desktop as Media Workspaces.
- The W: drive is designed to be a temporary workspace for transferring files from one employee to another on campus. Mac users will see this drive mounted on their desktop as Temporary Workspace. Data on this drive is NOT backed up and is PERMANENTLY DELETED on the 1st & 3rd WEDNESDAY of each month. Please plan your file transfers accordingly.
