Support - How Do I . . .?

Configure Email Clients

About the Email Settings

When first setting up an email client on your own (Netscape or Mac Mail), you will be given a choice between using Internet Mail Access Protocol (IMAP) and Post Office Protocol (POP).

We suggest that you use IMAP, which stores your mail on our servers, so that you can access it wherever you happen to be. However, if you use IMAP, you need to periodically delete or move your messages to local folders, in order to keep from running out of space.

POP can be used instead, although it is not recommended. POP permanently deletes email from our servers after downloading it to your personal computer. This means that you cannot access it from any other computer after it has been downloaded.

Note: Strict naming conventions are adhered to when setting up email clients.

Configuring Campuswide Addressbook

These instructions show the settings used to configure the use of Denison's campus-wide address book. The instructions and diagrams are for the Thunderbird mail client. However, the same settings could be used in any mail client that can use an LDAP address book. NOTE: Using the Denison LDAP address book does NOT work from off-campus. It is an on-campus utility only.

To setup the Denison LDAP Directory in Thunderbird, click on "Tools", "Options" and then the "Composition" icon.

Click on the "Addressing" tab and click in the box for "Directory Server", then click on "Edit Directories" button. Within the "Edit Directories" window click on the "Add" button.

Within the "Directory Server Properties" on the "General" tab input the following information into the boxes.

Name: Denison LDAP
Hostname: ldap.cache.denison.edu
Base DN: ou=people, dc=denison, dc=edu
Click the "Use secure connection (SSL)" box. This should set the port number to 636. Your properties box should look like this:

Click the "OK" button in each window as you work back to your normal screen. This should save these settings.

Now we need to tell the mail client to use these settings when you are composing a mail message. Click on "Tools", "Account Settings" and under the profile you wish to change (should be named "Mail for username@denison.edu" where the username is your's) click on "Composition & Addressing". Click in the box for "Use a different LDAP server" and select "Denison LDAP" from the pull down menu. When you get done it should look like this:

Again, click the "OK" button in each window as you work back to your normal screen. This should save these settings.
