Filter Email

There are several filters you can set up to control your email: vacation filters, black lists, white lists, spam, and message sorting filters. All are controlled through the webmail interface.  Once setup they will apply to all mail received after setup no matter what email client you choose to read your mail.

Vacation Filters

Vacation filters are set up to automatically reply with an "away" message to anyone who sends a message to your email account. Refer to the step-by-step instructions to set up a vacation filter. Don't forget to disable the filter once you return.

Blacklist Filters

Blacklist filters are set up to block messages that make it through the anti-spam software and into your inbox. Blacklists stop unwanted messages from reaching your inbox. Blacklists are controlled through the webmail interface (click on the filters link).

Whitelist Filters

Occasionally, the anti-spam software marks messages as spam even though you want to receive them in your inbox. The anti-spam software will ignore those messages that are in a whitelist filter and send them to the user's inbox. Whitelists are controlled through the webmail interface (click on the filters link).

Spam Filters

Spam filters allow you to set the level at which the system considers messages to be spam. For more detailed information on how Denison deals with spam see our Spam and Anti-Spam tutorial. All messages are given a spam score depending on how likely that message is to be spam.  Messages with a score of 10 or above are quarantined and not delivered to your account. Messages marked with [SPAM] have a spam score of 5 to 10 and while somewhat likely to be spam are considered too borderline to quarantine. Messages with a spam score greater than 0 and less than 5 are more likely too be spam, but a lot of valid messages can have a low spam score as well. You can set a spam filters that can delete or move spam to other folders. You can also lower the score you want to consider as spam and move to another folder (a spam folder or Trash). For instance, maybe you want to delete all messages marked with the tag [SPAM], but put anything with a spam score between 3 and 5 in a spam folder for you to review later. Message Sorting Filters

Sometimes you receive messages from a known source or of a specific type that you want to have the system sort into a folder for you to refer to later. For instance, you receive a lot of messages from my-favorite-list@domain.edu and you want to put all those messages into a folder called my-favorite-list. Sorting rules are controlled through the Webmail interface (click filters link).

Copying Filters

We have made the old webmail software available to allow you to look up your old filter settings, allowing users to copy their white or black lists and setup similar filters in the new software.
