Recommendation For Purchasing A Smart Phone Or High End PDA/Mobile Phone

We in the Computing Services Department understand there is a growing interest in PDAs that combine phone/email/calendar functions. There are a wide variety of similar units available; therefore we would like our clients to consider the following information before making a decision on which device or service to purchase.

First you should talk to Kathy Arnholt (X6284) in the Purchasing Office. She is up to date on the preferred vendors providing service to Denison University.

Computing Services has experience setting up the Treo 700P (Palm Operating System) and the Verizon services. This unit works well with the Oracle Calendar application supported by Computing Services and interfaces easily with our email service. The Treo 700W (Windows Mobile Operating System) has exhibited some stability problems and is harder to synchronize with Oracle Calendar.

Computing Services does not recommend the Blackberry devices. There is no off the shelf support for synchronizing the Blackberry with Oracle Calendar and there would be considerable cost to develop this ability. We have no experience synchronizing Blackberry email service with our email service.

The vendors are constantly updating models and software versions. And our Oracle Calendar and email services are also updated regularly. It takes time to adjust our procedures to make these changes work with what we have. By limiting the variables we are able to quickly make these adjustments.

For these reasons, at this time Computing Services recommends the Treo 700P with Verizon service for those clients seeking this technology.
