Faculty/Staff FAQs

How do I receive a Novell account?

Denison employees are automatically assigned a Novell LAN account and email account once they are officially hired by the University. However, employee verification and account creation processes may take up to three business days to complete. Once created, the account remains active until the person officially ends their employment with the University.  If you are a Denison employee and do not yet have a Novell LAN account or email account, please check with Human Resources or the Provost office.

How do I create a temporary visitor account?

Guest accounts are created by the faculty, staff, or student hosting the visitor. This may be accomplished with or without assistance from the Helpdesk via the DU Guest Access website. Guest accounts take about 10 minutes to setup.

Novell Visitor accounts are requested by the faculty or staff sponsor hosting the visitor. Please note that Novell Visitor accounts may take up to three business days to setup. Click here to find out how to create a Novell Visitor account.

How do I log into the LAN?

Windows:  Computing Services pre-installs Novell software on faculty and staff offices computers. This software works with Denison's LAN to provide you with all of the resources described on this web site. To log in ("authenticate") using this software, enter your username and password when prompted to do so at boot up.

Macintosh: Denison-owned Macintosh computers are capable of accessing the Novell LAN's resources.  Newer Macintosh computers are set up to direct your Macintosh login information to Denison's LAN system for seamless access to folders and printers.

Where do I save my files?

Personal storage space is provided on the U drive (also referred to as a: "Personal Workspace".)  Data on the Novell LAN is archived to backup tape each night.  To access this Novell volume:

Windows Use Explorer or My Computer to locate the U: drive.  You can save directly to the U: drive from a Windows based software application, or drag-n-drop the files to and from the U: drive.

Macintosh The name of the desktop alias is generally "Personal Workspace", but may vary depending on whom the Macintosh is configured to serve.

How do I share files with others?

You can share files using shared drives.

How do I access my files from off-campus?

You can access your files using a VPN client.

Are my files backed up when they are stored on the LAN?

Yes. The server's disk volumes back up nightly. In addition, any time you save or modify a file on the LAN:

  • Server based antivirus processes scan the file for the presence of known viruses and remove them if possible.
  • If the file is replacing an existing file, the server's operating system retains the last revisions of the file. These old versions are kept temporarily online in case the file is unintentionally overwritten.
  • During a file save, the physical server hardware writes checksum data across several disk drives to help ensure the safety of the file in the event of a disk drive hardware failure.
  • At 2am each night, a tape library system reads new and modified files from the disk arrays and archives them to high compression data cartridges. The cartridges are then delivered to a safe at another physical location to further ensure data integrity.

How do I have a file restored?

Fill out the Data Restoration form.

Is my computer slow because of a LAN server?

There are many components to Denison's network. Here is a list of questions to help you determine the cause:

  • Has rebooting the computer helped the problem?
  • How many applications do you have open on your desktop when the slowdown occurs?
  • When did the problem start? If the problem has been continuous, then it is possible that your PC requires more memory or the operating system needs to be reloaded. This problem can also be related to the age of your computer and its ability to handle the latest software.
  • Are there trends to the slowdowns? (example: every day at 1:30pm) If slowdowns happen at particular time of the day, it may be related to scheduled heavy processes or a period of popular use which overwhelms our central systems (Ex: checking email after lunch at 1:30pm is very popular).
  • Do your coworkers have this problem at the same time you do? This could indicate a network or server software problem or performance issue.
  • What services are affected by the slowdown? (Ex: BANNER, email, internet, problems saving spreadsheets to U: drive, etc.)

I am leaving Denison or retiring. How long can I keep my account?

Denison's policy is to disable all accounts on the next business day after the employee's last day of employment. Any request to keep the account active beyond this date must be in writing (email or memo) from the Chair/Director/Supervisor of the employee and must be received in the Office of the Director of Computing Services with a copy to the Help Desk 24 hours before the last day of employment.

Retiring staff can obtain retiree email and Novell accounts by filling out the Application for Network Services

For more information, see Denison's policy on departing faculty and staff.
