Remote Access to the LAN

Denison's Novell LAN is accessible via the Internet to all Denison students, faculty and staff. Account access is protected with your Novell username and password. Note that Denison no longer uses NetDrive for accessing Novell resources for Windows.

Novell NetDrive for Windows

Access to Novell resources from off-campus is provided by a combination of the Juniper remote access service and either the Novell client that is already installed on Denison owned system or via batch files that can be downloaded from Denison’s remote access menu. The Novell drives are mounted on the local computer with the familiar U and S drive designations. You will be prompted for your Novell account username and password.

  • Connect to Denison using the current remote access solution.  See Installation instructions.
  • Select to appropriate Login batch file from the menu (“DU Admin Login Drives”, “DU Acad Drives Login”, or “DU Student Login”) and save the file to your desktop.
  • Select the “DU Drives Logout” and save that file to your desktop.
  • Once saved, you do not have to download these files again unless you want another copy.
  • Select “Network Connect” off the remote access menu or use the Juniper/Network Connect from the Windows program menu to run in full VPN mode.
  • Click on the Login Batch file that you saved to your desktop. You will be prompted for your Novell password.
  • When you are done using your Novell drives, click on the Logout batch file to dismount the drives.

Macintosh Native Connection using VPN

Owners of Macintosh workstations running OS 10.x can access the Novell LAN remotely in the same way they access it from their office. However, for security reasons, this network traffic needs to be funneled through a VPN (Virtual Private Network) so that the data is strongly encrypted.  To access the VPN, use the “Network Connect” off the remote access menu and then access the drives as you would when on campus.  See the installation instructions for more information on a Macintosh installation.

Using FTP Software

For students only. There are various FTP software programs that, when configured properly, can access Denison's Novell LAN. However, Computing Services has found that the following programs and methods work best with the specific FTP services available on the Novell LAN. Using the links provided below, you can access or download all of the necessary files to make the FTP connection and have the ability to upload and download files with a drag-n-drop interface.

Windows Go to ftp://(your user name)@proteus.cc.denison.edu. Enter your Novell password when prompted. Click here for additional instructions.

Macintosh Use Fetch 4.0, developed by Fetch Softworks (Customized settings for Fetch are integrated into this download). Download software here. After download, check the Macintosh desktop for the "Fetch" installer file.

License Information: Fetch 4.0 for the Macintosh is free ONLY to Denison students via the password-protected link above. The software is licensed by Denison University. Please read the Fetch software license agreement.

Obtaining Support

To obtain support for these products, please review the related company support web page. If after attempts to resolve the problem through the software companies support resources, you continue to experience problems, email the Denison Computing Services Help Desk at helpdesk@denison.edu.

Before you begin, it is important to note that Denison's Computing Services can offer only limited support for accessing your Novell account remotely and we cannot guarantee successful connectivity. With the seemingly infinite combinations of computer hardware and software available to consumers today, we are limited with time and staff availability to properly diagnose problems on home computers. We have found that the newer the computer and operating system, the greater the chance you have for success with accessing your LAN account.

To help us troubleshoot your access problem, be sure to include the following in your email message:

  • Description of your computer and your Internet connection. (Make/model, name of online service, etc)
  • Description of the problem, including the steps to reproduce it.
  • The phone number where you can be reached and your Denison email address (All replies will be sent to your Denison email address.)

Important Precautions

Security Measures If your PC is shared among other people, please take precautions when accessing your account remotely. It is strongly recommended that you:

  • Have a Novell LAN account password only known by you.
  • Do not use common words or names for your passwords.
  • NEVER leave a session active when you are away from your computer.

Firewalls It is recommended that you install or enable a firewall on your system. However, if after installing a firewall, your choosen remote access method (ex: Netdrive) is not working, be sure to check the firewall documentation for "creating a firewall rule".

Virus & Spyware Protection It is also strongly recommended that you have an antivirus and spyware scanner loaded on your computer to help prevent:

  • your LAN files from being infected by the computer.
  • your password from being recorded by maliciously installed spyware or key logger programs.

Remember, the LAN servers cannot protect your files remotely!

Working With Files (from Internet Explorer) When working with your files without the Novell client, it is strongly recommended that you follow this procedure:
  • From the browser window (displaying your files), copy (drag-n-drop) the files you wish to work with to your Windows desktop (or a temporary location on your C: drive.)
  • Log out of your connection to Denison's Novell LAN (simply close the Internet Explorer application) and disconnect from your ISP (if off-campus dialup access)
  • Make all necessary changes to the local copies of those files.
  • When you are finished, reconnect to your ISP (if applicable) and your Novell LAN account. Drag-n-drop the files back to your LAN account.
