Sharing data on the LAN has become an important and widely used resource on Denison's campus. The Workspaces structure allows the Denison community to share data in many ways under one simplified folder structure. You can access the folder structure described below by going to your S: drive on a PC or the alias 'Shared Workspaces' on a Mac. Refer also to the snapshots picturing and describing the folders on the s drive.
With the use of Workspaces, Denison employees can create shared folders for use in the following ways:
- Share "internal office use only" data with other employees.
- Receive data files from other employees on campus through an "Inbox" design.
- Receive reports from Banner in a native file format.
- Share data with a class and allow the class to work collectively on the data.
- Accept homework assignments on the LAN.
- Share data with those involved in a research project.
- Work collectively on files with a group having shared responsibilities.
- Share data with a committee (available to students under a named advisor).
- Share data with an on-campus organization (available to students under a named advisor)
- Share data with student workers, interns, visitors, or external contracted help.
- Exclusively maintain the contents of a departmentally-owned shared folder.
- As an employee, provide viewable-only data to the campus community in a dedicated place.
One-Step Interoffice Communication for Employees
S:\Departments\(Department Name)\(Work Area)\
This folder structure allows you to share files with members of your department. The folder is provided to every faculty and staff member on campus by default and is visible only by your department's staff.
S:\Departments\(Department Name)\LAN Inboxes\(Employee Name)\
Private folders are designed to allow a faculty or staff member to transfer files to another faculty or staff member on campus quickly, easily, and securely. There is only one Private LAN-Inbox folder per faculty and staff member; each faculty and staff member has very limited access to each other's Private LAN-Inbox folder.
Customized Project Workspaces for Employees
S:\(Workspace Owner Name)
This multifunctional folder structure provides locations to store data related to administrative functions, such as:
- static data resources
- time stamped data
- cross-departmental data collections.
This folder structure is not provided to each faculty or staff member by default. Therefore, you must log into the Workspace Builder web site to obtain a Workspace. This web site allows you to build custom Workspace folders and assign other members of the campus community access. There are no set limits on the number of Workspaces a faculty or staff member can create.
Faculty-to-Student Collaborative Workspaces
S:\(Workspace Owner Name)\
This folder structure contains all classroom and research Workspace folders for Denison's faculty. Whether the project requires mass storage, multiple class access, computer lab data, or special faculty research projects, you will find them in this folder. The new functionality built into the Workspace folder design is explained in detail on this web site.
Customized Research and Organizational Workspaces for Students
S:\Organizations\(Organization Name)\
This folder structure allows students, student groups, clubs and organizations to have designated folders for their data sharing needs. This folder structure is not provided to each student by default. Therefore, the student must log into the Workspace Builder web site to obtain a Student Workspace. This web site allows students to build custom Workspace folders and assign other members of the campus community access (faculty and staff for example). There are no set limits on the number of Workspaces a student can create.
