Student Computing Frequent Questions (FAQ)

The Basics:

  1. Connect to our Campus-wide Wireless Network.
  2. Complete our required Computer Registration to protect your computer and our network!
  3. Be aware of your rights and responsibilities! Both the Acceptable Use Policy [pdf] and Student Computing - Service Level Agreement apply to all technology activities at Denison.

Specifics:

+ What network service accounts do I get and when are they available?

Standard accounts including e-mail, myDENISON, Self Service, and Novell LAN are automatically created before your first semester, usually before June Orientation. Other accounts such as webby (personal web space) can be applied for and you will be notified when they become available.

Student accounts are deactivated 90 days after graduation or withdrawal from the University unless specific arrangements have been made and approved by the Office of Student Affairs.

+ I haven't received my password. What is my password?

Initial passwords are outlined here. Please change your passwords immediately. Note: passwords are case-sensitive.

  • Email, My Denison, Blackboard: Your user name is the first six letters of your last name, an underscore, and your first initial. Your default password is the last 8 digits on the back of your Student ID.

  • Self Service: Your user name is a capital "D" plus the last 8 digits on the back of your Student ID. Your default password is your 6 digit birth date (mm/dd/yy).

  • Novell: Lab Access and Network File Storage: Your user name is the same as your e-mail user name. Your initial password is the last 8 digits on the back of your Student ID. Note: while this accounts starts with the same password as e-mail and others, they can be changed independently.
+ How do I connect to the network?
  1. Prepare your computer: our Denison University Network Enabler will explain the requirements and best practices.
  2. Connect to our wireless (SSID: Denison) or get an Ethernet cable (14-foot cables available at the Help Desk) to connect to our wired network.
  3. Once connected, open a browser and authenticate to complete our short Computer Registration process.
  4. Get Help! Contact our Help Desk (x6395) or attend one of the Network Blitzes.
+ Do you provide an Ethernet cable?

Yes, our Help Desk provides 14-ft Ethernet cables. Longer cables are some times available depending on supply and demand. If you need multiple cables or longer cables, you can find them at our bookstore or local stores like Walmart, Best Buy or Staples.

At the end of the year, please return the cables to the Help Desk. We will recycle or redistribute them next year.

+ Can I set up a router in my dorm room?

Wireless:

No. Denison University is 95% wireless. Personal wireless routers are known to interfere with the wireless service that we provide. Therefore, these devices are not permitted on campus. Routers without wireless service and mini-switches are still welcome.

Wireless access points and wireless routers will have their network service disconnected.

Non-wireless:

    Yes.  Wired routers can be registered by submitting the router's MAC address(es) to our Help Desk x6395.

+ Can I use peer-to-peer or file-sharing software?

Denison maintains a variety of policies about peer-to-peer and file-sharing software. The full text of these policies is available online or using the links below.

+ What software is available through the network?

Please visit our Software Center for complete information, downloads, and instructions. Microsoft Office, McAfee anti-virus software, and other titles are available to Denison students.

+ How do I stop viruses, adware, and other scams?

For suggestions and tutorials about how to protect your computer from viruses, malware, phishing, and other exploitations, visit the Support Center.

To keep your computer running effectively, Denison recommends that you follow some general maintenance guidelines.

+ What computers are compatible with the network?

Most computers purchased from Dell or Apple have the hardware necessary to connect to Denison's network. For a list of recommended sytems and available educational discounts, visit the Buy a Computer page.

+ Can I set up my computer as a server?

To set up your computer as a server, exclude it from Denison's firewall, or allow external machines to connect to it, you must complete our Server Registration Form.

+ How do I create a guest account for a visitor?

Guest Accounts are created by the student hosting the visitor. This may be accomplished with or without assistance from the Helpdesk via the DU Guest Access website. Guest accounts take about 10 minutes to setup.
