Student Network FAQs

Information about connecting to the new campus-wide wireless network is available here. You must run the BigRedDisc and install Denison's anti-virus software before connecting to the network!

All student computing activities at Denison are subject to the Acceptable Use Policy and the Student Computing Agreement.

If you have unresolved problems, call the Help Desk at x6395 (or, after hours, submit the Help Request Form) or attend one of the Network Blitzes. You may also schedule an appointment with a Student Network Consultant.

What network service accounts do I get and when are they available?

You are offered a number of accounts including e-mail, myDENISON, Web4Student, and Novell LAN. These are automatically created for you before your first semester, usually before June Orientation. Other accounts such as webby (personal web space) can be applied for and you will be notified when they become available.

Students' accounts are deactivated when they are no longer enrolled at the University. Unless a student re-enrolls, the deactivated account and its associated files are removed from the system two weeks prior to the beginning of the next semester. This grace period allows time for non-returning students to request temporary access to retrieve data, if necessary. It also permits students who are returning late to Denison to retain their work from previous semesters.

How do I change my password?

How do I connect to the network?

Get an ethernet cable (14-foot cables available at the Help Desk) and insert the 2006 Big Red Disc. Run the disc and follow the instructions before plugging your computer into the network port in your room! Once you plug in your computer, open your internet browser. You should be directed to a registration page where you will be prompted to enter your email usename and password. This allows you to connect to Denison's network.

Full instructions are available in the Red Book, which is distributed in all first-year orientation packets and available at the Help Desk.

If you experience problems connecting, call the Help Desk (x6395) or attend one of the Network Blitzes. You may also schedule an appointment with a Student Network Consultant.

Do you provide an ethernet cable?

Yes, we do provide each student with a 14-ft ethernet cable and they are available at the Help Desk in Fellows Lobby. If the cable is too short, return it to the Help Desk. Multiple or longer cables are available for purchase from the bookstore or local stores like Walmart, Best Buy or Staples.

Can I set up a router in my dorm room?

Wireless:

No. Denison University will be 95% wireless by the fall of 2006. Personal wireless access points and wireless routers are known to interfere with the wireless service the University provides. Therefore, these devices are not permitted on campus. Routers without wireless service and mini-switches are still welcome.

Wireless access points and wireless routers will have their network service disconnected.

Non-wireless:

Yes.  Wired routers can be registered by contacting Andy Babb, Student Computing Coordinator (babb@denison.edu).
