Support - How Do I . . .?
Computer Maintenance FAQs
A window pops up from McAfee telling me I have a virus and it won't delete/clean/quarantine it. What should I do?
First, check to see if the file that came up is described as adware (the file may be labeled as a program or have adware as part of the name). To be sure, update and run Ad-Aware/Spybot. If you do not have these programs, install them now.
If you have run Ad-Aware/Spybot and you are still receiving the McAfee pop-up window, take note of the filename for the virus and look it up at McAfee's Virus Control Center or Symantec's Virus Control Center to get instructions for its removal. If you still cannot find a fix for the virus and would like additional help, see the referral list.
My computer won't start up, freezes regularly, won't wake up from hibernation, or won't turn on. What should I do?
Make sure all the wires are plugged in securely (i.e. the power cord). If this was not the problem, you probably have a hardware failure. Denison Computing Services does not support personal computers' hardware; we strongly recommend that you contact your manufacturer's tech support. You can also visit the referral list.
I get a lot of pop-up advertisements while browsing the internet. What should I do to get rid of these?
Pop-ups are caused by adware that installs itself onto your computer while you browse certain internet web pages. Ad-Aware and Spybot are good programs to delete these adware files. Make sure you update the reference file first and then run the program. If you don't already have them downloaded, you can get them here. Also, you might want to take a look at our computer maintenance page to get ideas of how to keep your computer running well.
