Use Firewalls
While Denison has a campus-wide firewall system, it is also a good idea to have a personal firewall running on your own computer. A personal firewall provides a second layer of security safeguarding you from the outside. It also protects you from computers within the Denison network.
Windows XP comes with a personal firewall built-in, which Denison strongly encourages you to enable. However, in order for certain games and programs to operate correctly, you will need to read the help files of the firewall to configure them properly. The EPO agent that updates the McAfee Virus Scan Definitions is one of these programs that needs to be configured with the XP firewall. Below are instructions on how to enable this firewall and configure it to allow the EPO agent to work properly:
Configuring the EPO Agent
Windows XP Service Pack 2 Firewall
- Go to the Control Panel.
- Switch to Classic View listed at the top of the left column.
- Double Click on the Network Connections icon.
- Right-click on the Local Area Connection that you are using to access the Denison network.
- Click Properties.
- Click the Advanced Tab at the top right.
- Click the Settings button towards the top.
- Make sure the circle to the left of On is darkened by clicking on it.
- Make sure the checkbox just under that is unchecked to allow exceptions.
- Click on the Exceptions tab at the top middle.
- Click Add Port just under the white area on this window.
- On the new window, click Change Scope at the bottom left.
- Darken the circle next to Custom list by clicking on it.
- In the newly available field, type:
140.141.2.4. Then click OK. - Under Name, type whatever you would like to describe the EPO agent.
- Under Port Number, type:
8081. - Make sure the circle to the left of TCP is darkened by clicking on it.
- Click OK until you are back to the Network Connections window.
