Publish Web Pages at Denison

Who Maintains the Denison Web Site?

The site is maintained by a network of page maintainers -- approximately 200 staff, faculty, and students with various levels of technical expertise.

How do I become a page maintainer?

  • To publish a personal website, you must be a member of (or sponsored by a member of) the Denison community in good standing.  To get a personal account, log into the Pagemaintainer's Database, select "apply for maintainer privileges" from the action menu, and "Request a Personal Website Account" from the form that follows.  New accounts are created automatically during normal business hours, Monday through Friday.  You should receive instructions and a confirmation email when the account is ready.
  • To serve as page maintainer for another sub-site on the Denison webserver, you must obtain permission from the organization supervisor, chair, or advisor; e.g., to become a page maintainer for the Department of Biology, you must have the approval of the Biology chair.

Current faculty, staff, and students can log into the Pagemaintainer's Database (requires myDENISON name and password) to request access privileges.  Please be sure to select 'apply for maintainer privileges' to request access to an existing website, or 'request new organization' to request a new site.

Note: Visitors and family members who have applied for Denison email or LAN accounts may not have been granted a web server account.  If this is the case, follow the instructions above and use the Pagemaintainer's Database.

How do I request a new site for my organization, conference, or research project?

Current faculty, staff, and students can use the Pagemaintainer's Database to request new sites.  Login with your myDENISON name and password, select "request new organization", and submit the form.

What software should I use to build my web page?

  • Department, Program, and Office Websites: Use Freestyle.
  • All other sites:

    XHTML, CSS, and text-based files:
Web Services recommends jEdit or writing and editing XHTML and CSS files. jEdit (pronounced "jay - edit") contains many features to help you maintain your website, such as spell-checking, code tidying, and XHTML tag insertion/completion.

    Images, PDFs, and other media:
To upload binary files (not plain-text) please use a secure FTP client.  Instructions can be found here:

NOTE: Denison's web servers no longer accept insecure Telnet or FTP connections. All campus-owned computers should now come preinstalled with secure alternatives (SSH, SFTP).

Where is my web site? How do I login/edit my pages?

  • Office/Department Websites:
    • Open a web browser to Freestyle and login with your myDENISON user name and password. Freestyle provides a point-and-click interface within a web browser window to facilitate the development of official Denison web pages. Web pages are built using a series of templates provided by Denison's Web Services department.
    • For more information on Freestyle visit our online FAQ.

Do pages have to look a certain way?

Personal homepages, faculty research projects, collaborative, student organization, and course pages and/or projects do not need to adhere to any style considerations other than the general ones discussed in the Web Design and Usability tutorials. In fact, they should not use any part of the official Denison look and feel, including the wordmark, the seal, or the navigation bar, unless they are maintained as part of a departmental sub-site within Freestyle.

Official Denison sub-sites include all academic departments, programs, administrative offices, and Denison-specific initiatives.  All official Denison sub-sites should be edited through Freestyle, which automatically applies the appropriate templates.

How do I request a personal website?
