Novell Client for Student Computers
Please use our Denison University Network Enabler (DU-NE) to get the Novell client for Windows. This client allows students to connect to the Novell file servers from their personal computers. The Denison University Network Enabler (DU-NE) also instructs on other connection options including those for Macintosh computers.
NOTE: Please DO NOT install this software on Denison owned equipment. The installer below is meant for student owned computers only. Faculty, staff, and lab computers are pre-configured for the Denison network.
For installation instructions, see Software Installation Documentation [pdf].
Novell Client 4.91 for Windows XP
In previous years, the Novell Client for Windows XP was pulled from the download page because of numerous instances when students were not aware of their computers' Windows passwords. This still could be an issue with the new client, however, we had very few problems last year with this new client. Please pay careful attention to the information here about the way Windows uses passwords and how you might not always know they are there.
Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP require users to authenticate to windows in order to use the computers. However, many home computers are set so that the user is not required to enter this password and thus many people forget it and even forget that it exists.
If you would like to try the Novell Client despite the risks, please download it from the DU-NE. Please be aware of the risks involved here and the difficulties you might face if you install the Novell software and do not know your Windows passwords. Computing Services may not be able to assist you with recovering your password or recover any data that you lose due to any recovery attempts that you make.
Recovering your passwords after you install Novell

- Once you are in Windows, please note your usernames and passwords and change them if necessary.
- You can find instructions for changing your Windows Username or password with the Windows Help tool or by searching Google.

Why Novell?
Advantages
- Centralized, Secure, Reliable Storage - Use it everywhere on campus, know that only you can access it and the data is backed up nightly.
- Accessible from any lab on campus and with FTP access from anywhere in the world.
- Pushed Applications for some classes - You will see this in the lab. If you have Windows 2000 or XP, you can get them on your own computer.
Disadvantages
- Users commonly do NOT know their Windows usernames and passwords and are locked out of their computer after installing Novell.
- The Novell client consumes resources. The more resources your computer expends, the slower it seems to perform.
- The Novell client prohibits the use of Windows XP Fast User Switching. Basically, the way you log into your computer is changed.
- Removing Novell has several steps.
Uninstalling or Removing Novell
