Download and Install jEdit

The version of jEdit that Denison currently supports is v4.2. Downloads of the program with Denison-specific plugins are available for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. Although jEdit is free, open source software available from www.jedit.org, Web Services provides the Denison community with a customized version for campus use. This version is for use by Denison faculty, staff, and students only. Keep in mind jEdit is already installed on most Denison computers.

Note: Internet Explorer 6.0 has known problems downloading jEdit 4.2 for Windows. We recommend that you use another broswer such as Firefox, which can be downloaded free here.

Macintosh

System requirements: Mac OS 10.3.x or above

  1. Verify the current version of jEdit is not already installed. Double-click the hard drive icon, then select Applications from the list at the left. If you don't find jEdit in your Applications folder, then select Find (Cmd-F) from the Finder's File menu and search for "jEdit".
  2. Verify a Java2 compliant virtual machine is installed. Type the command java -version into a terminal window. (Java v1.3 or higher is required; updates are available from Sun Microsystems.)
  3. Download the jEdit Mac OS X Installer [6.6MB] and optional

Note: If you are using Internet Explorer 5 or earlier, control-click the link and select "Download Link to Disk" from the context menu. Some web browsers may attempt to display rather than download the installer. If this happens, right-click the link and choose "Save Target As...".

  4. Double-click the "jEdit42Installer.dmg" to mount the disk image, if your browser hasn't already, then follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Drag the disk image and "jEdit42Installer.dmg" file to the trash.
  6. Repeat steps 2-4 with the "Fink071Install.dmg" only if you downloaded the Fink Spelling Libraries.

Windows

System requirements: Windows 2000 or above

  1. Verify the current version of jEdit is not already installed. Go to Start >> Programs and look for jEdit. If it isn't located in Programs, select Start >> Search >> Files or Folders [Windows XP] or Start >> Find >> Files or Folders and search for "jEdit".
  2. Verify a Java2 compliant virtual machine is installed. Type the command java -version into a command prompt. Java v1.3 or higher is required. Lower versions can be updated from Sun Microsystems.
  3. Download Denison's Java-based jEdit Installer [8.2MB]. Some web browsers may attempt to display rather than download the installer. If this happens, right-click the link and choose "Save Target As...".

Note: Internet Explorer 6.0 SP2 renames "jedit4.2denison.jar" to "jedit4.2denison.zip" in error. In order to avoid setup complications please rename the file when prompted to "jedit4.2denison.jar" by changing the "Save as Type" to "All Files" and changing the file name to "jedit4.2denison.jar".

  4. Double-click the .jar file and follow the on-screen instructions.
