Freestyle Walkthroughs
Introduction to Basic Tasks
Logging In
Go to https://freestyle.denison.edu in your browser.
To log in, enter your e-mail username and password.
You are now directed to your workspace. Clicking on the Edit link for a particular story will redirect you to the Story Profile screen for that particular story, where you can start making changes. If the story is not already in your workspace, you can also search for stories on the workflow (on the left) and search either by selecting the Find Stories link, or looking in a Desk.
If you cannot log in, make sure you are correctly entering your password. If your password is correct but you still cannot log in, you may need to request an account; please see our web publishing FAQ for instructions.
Creating a New Story
Click on the Pages Workflow on the left side of the screen.
Click on New Story.
Add a Title, select "Standard Page" as the Story Type (or pick another type if you know what you want), select a Source (who owns the file), and a Primary Category (where the story will be published).
Click Create.
Your story has been created and the Story Profile screen is displayed. You can now add elements and content to your story.
Adding Text
Story editing begins on the Story Profile screen. To add text and other content, scroll down to the Content section.
To add more text, select the "Enhanced Paragraph" option from the drop-down box and click Add Element. Freestyle will display the Element Profile screen for the new paragraph, where you can enter your content.
You can bold, italicize, and underline your text within the enhanced paragraph. You can also add numbered and unnumbered lists.
When finished, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the Save button. It will take you back to the Story Profile screen.
To preview the page, go up to the Story Information section and click on the red URI link. The preview will open in a new window or tab.
When you are ready to save your progress, click the Save button until you've returned to the Story Profile screen. From here you can save, shelve, or publish your story.
Creating Links
There are four types of links you can add to an enhanced paragraph:
- Internal Story (links to pages on Denison website)
- E-mail (links to an individual's e-mail address)
- External (links to pages outside of Denison website i.e. Google, Yahoo)
- Internal Media (links to media files on Denison website i.e. pdf, word, software, images)
All four links follow the same basic rules. You need to:
- add a link to your story
- define the resource or web address that you're linking to
- define the link text that is displayed in the story
- define what key is used to place the link in your content
The key is a one-word reference used insert a link in text. Wherever you want your link to appear type the word link followed by a left square bracket, the key you defined, and a right square bracket, like so: link[myKey]
Note: the key is case sensitive, and can contain no spaces.
The link text replaces the link command when your page is published. In our example above, if our link text was "go to google.com", then all instances of link[myKey] will be replaced with a link the reads go to google.com when you preview or publish the story.
1. Internal Story
Select Link - Internal Story from the drop-down box and and click Add Element
When on the link profile, you must put in the key and link text (see definitions above).
To relate a story, scroll down to related story section and click Edit.
Find desired story and click Relate.
Then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Save which takes you back to enhanced paragraph profile.
To put a link into enhanced paragraph text, you will need a key that you created earlier. If you don't remember the key, you can find it below the enhanced paragraph box.
Find a place where you want to put the link and type in the word 'link', then open a square bracket. Type in the key and close the square bracket. Ex.: link[key]. There must be no spaces in between.
After you are done, apply changes and preview the story.
2. E-mail
Choose Link - Email from the drop-down box and click Add Element
Put in the appropriate key, e-mail address to which you are linking, and link text. Then click Save.
You need not relate a story for e-mail links.
When back on the story profile, put in link key in desired place in the enhanced paragraph (see screenshot for internal story link).
Apply changes and preview the story.
3. External
Choose Link - External from the drop-down box and click Add Element
Type in the appropriate key, URL of the website to which you are linking (must start with http://), and link text. Then Save.
Put link key in desired place in the enhanced paragraph.
Apply changes and preview the story.
To save your progress, go back to the story and click Save button.
4. Internal Media
Select Link - Internal Media from the drop-down box and click Add Element
Type in the appropriate key and link text.
To find media files, click on Edit in the Related Media section.
Find the desired media file and click relate, then Save.
Put in a key name in the desired location within the enhanced paragraph.
Apply changes and preview the story
To save your progress, go back to your story and click the Save button.
Publishing a Story
On the Story Profile screen, find the Check-In drop down and button on the bottom right. Select ". . . and Publish" from the drop down.
Click the Check-In button (not Save!).
Your story has been published.
Finding an Already Published Story
On the Workflow (left side of the screen), click on your particular office or department dropdown, and under actions, select Find Stories.
In the search box, type the title of the story you are looking for.
If you need to refine your search, click the Advanced Search link near the top of the screen.
Limiting your search by URI is the most effective way to narrow your results. For example, if your site is /offices/computing/, typing "computing" in the URI field will limit your results to stories in that category. Advanced search is useful when looking for pages that frequently recur on the site, such as Faculty and Staff index pages.
Once you've found the story you want, select the Check Out box on the right and click the Check Out Button at the bottom of the screen.
Your story has been successfully checked out to you and is now on your workspace; you will be redirected to the Story Profile screen. You are now ready to add elements and content to your story.
Deleting & Expiring Stories
Delete A Story
To delete a story from the story profile, scroll to the bottom of the story profile and select the check box delete this profile. Click save. It is no longer necessary to also expire the page.
A story can also be deleted from the workspace. Select the delete check box across from the story you wish to delete, and scroll down to the bottom of the page, and select delete checked. Again, it is no longer necessary to also expire the page.
Expire A Story
In addition to deleting a story, a story can be removed from the web server by setting an expiration date. In the information section (top of the page) on the story profile, you can set the expire date for sometime in the future. At this set expired date, the page will no longer be accessible.
