WebVPN Tutorial
Before You Begin
WebVPN allows access to webpages that are restricted because of licensing or security concerns, such as some Library web resources.
The WebVPN service is a clientless, web-based version of VPN, built to be compatible with as many different computers as possible.
Basic requirements
An internet connection
Cookies enabled
A WebVPN supported web browser. Any recent browser should work, however the Internet Explorer version 6.0, Netscape version 7.1, Mozilla version 1.4, and Safari version 1.0 for Macs have been verified.
- Login to WebVPN
Go to the WebVPN login site. Enter your LDAP username and password, which is usually your email username and password, and click Login.
NOTE: If you are on campus and would like to use the webvpn please follow this link rather then the link provided above.

Figure A: WebVPN login screen - The Homepage
You are now viewing the WebVPN homepage [Figure B]. From this starting point you can browse to almost any website. To do this, click on one of the links to Denison resources located in the Websites section of the page or enter a website address in the Enter Web Address (URL) box at the bottom of the page and click Go. This way you can securely browse Denison-owned resources. Keep in mind the situations when you should and should not use a VPN, covered on Using the VPN.
You should also see a second window appear [Figure C]. Most pop-up blockers prevent this window from appearing. If yours does not appear, click the "If the Floating Toolbar does not open..." link. The floating toolbar allows you to enter website addresses as you browse using WebVPN.
For this tutorial, click the Denison Library Web Resources link to continue.

Figure C: Floating address toolbar - Surfing the Web
You now see the William H. Doane Library page. Note that the Denison University WebVPN Services band at the top is still there. This indicates that you are still securely browsing with the WebVPN service. You may browse the page below the WebVPN band as you like, or use the Address box within the WebVPN band to browse to a new site.
Notice the five square buttons in the upper right hand corner [Figure D]. From left to right:
- Move to other side moves these five icons to the other side of the page, in cases where it is in your way.
- Go To Address opens a prompt to enter a new website address to browse to.
- Show Toolbar re-opens the floating toolbar.
- Home Page takes you back to the WebVPN homepage, pictured in Figure1-10.
- Logout logs you out of the WebVPN service.
