Class of 2009 First-Year Project

09projectheader.jpg

In the late 1940s, Paul Bennett, then a young professor of English, set to the work of building a house near Denison.Working at night and during breaks from classes, and carrying many of the materials to the site on his bicycle, Professor Bennett constructed a house of which his spirit became as much a part as the wild cherry beams he used. A beloved member of the faculty and our Poet in Residence until his death a year ago, Bennett's poem "Building a House" provides the title of this year's creative project, and embodies the themes we'll explore throughout the year ahead. Below are a collection of pictures from the reception event with the Opening Convocation speaker, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, on August 30, 2005.
