May I take my financial aid to an approved off-campus study program?

Denison need-based institutional grant aid is available for one semester of off-campus study for US citizens, resident aliens and international students who qualify.  The institutional grant aid for off campus study is capped at an amount determined annually.

To receive Denison need-based grant funds:

• US Citizens and resident aliens must file a FAFSA and it needs to be received by April 1 in the Financial Aid Office and submit all requested documentation to complete the financial aid file so that it is received by April 15
• Students must be making satisfactory progress and be in good standing, according to Denison’s policy.
• Students must be enrolled during the semesters before and after the off-campus program to be eligible for Denison aid.   Note: If you do not re-enroll at Denison after your semester at an off-campus program, you will be billed for the amount of the Denison Grant forwarded to the program.

Denison merit awards are not available for off-campus study programs except Denison's Oak Ridge and Giessen programs.

GLCA & ACM Tuition Benefits

Tuition remission may not cover tuition costs for off-campus study programs, sponsored either by GLCA, ACM, or individually by the college the student is attending. Participating students should check with appropriate officials at the college providing the tuition benefit to determine which fees and off-campus program may be covered by tuition remission.

Denison University tuition remission does not pay fees for abroad/off-campus programs with the exception of the Denison sponsored Oak Ridge program and the Giessen Exchange Program.

What is the Financial Aid Application deadline for Off Campus Programs?

The Financial Aid Office must receive your FAFSA data by April, 1^st.

Please note that it takes three days for our office to receive your data, so submit your FAFSA before March, 28^th. Additional documents must be received by April 15th if requested. If requested documents are not received by that deadline, you will not be eligible to receive aid from Denison to attend your program.

May I use my Denison Scholarship on an Off-Campus program?

You may not take any Denison merit-based scholarship to off-campus programs. However, if you demonstrate eligibility for need-based financial aid, the resources described in question #1 may be available to you.

May I use my financial aid for the Denison Summer programs?

Yes, if you have remaining loan eligibility for the academic year prior to the summer program.

Can international students use their Denison aid on an off-campus program?

What should I do to make arrangements for financial aid?

Steps for receiving aid for an off campus study program:

1. Apply for the program with the Off-Campus Study Office by the stated deadline.
2. The Off Campus Study Office will notify the Financial Aid Office of your approval.
3. If you are filing for need based aid, you must have filed the FAFSA by March 28th.
4. The Financial Aid Office will establish a consortium agreement (formal contract) with your program to receive required information to determine eligibility for need-based aid.
5. If you have never filed for need-based aid, you can file the FAFSA to see if you qualify for sources of need based aid that can be used for off-campus study.
6. If your file is complete, the Financial Aid Office will package your need based aid for the academic year when grades are final. The Financial Aid Office will make appropriate adjustments in the financial aid award and send you an award notification.
7. All students who have completed a FAFSA must complete an Off-Campus Need-Based Financial Aid Agreement Form [pdf] before any financial aid will disburse. 
8. If the financial aid award includes a Federal Direct Loan, Perkins Loan or Denison Scholar Loan, and you would like to accept these funds, you will need to sign a promissory note.

If I decide to go on an off-campus program, what will be charged and how will I be billed?

Advance program deposits are required by all programs and must be paid directly to the program by the family. These must come from personal funds because they are a guarantee of your commitment to participate and are non-refundable should you not attend the program.

An Administrative Off-Campus Fee will be billed to you by Denison. If you decide to go off campus for a full year to the same program then you will be charged an additional Administrative Fee for the Spring semester. GLCA and ACM sponsored programs, as well as the affiliated Advanced Studies in England Program, bill Denison and these charges will be reflected on your Denison semester statement. All other programs will bill you directly upon receipt of your enrollment deposit.

How is my financial aid transferred to the program?

Once you receive your financial aid award letter and receive your program invoice, contact the Student Accounts Office so that they can let you know how much money is available to transfer to the program. They will require a copy of your program invoice so that you can be sure that the combination of Denison funds and your personal funds will cover the entire balance. In some cases there may be additional funds (after the program bill is paid in full) for “out-of-pocket” expenses (travel, etc.), which will be paid to you directly.
