Outside Scholarship Opportunities

The Financial Aid Office has been notified of the following scholarship opportunities. Application materials for these scholarships can be obtained below or in the Financial Aid Office. For additional information about any particular scholarship, contact the scholarship foundation.

+ Capital University Army ROTC

Application Deadline:  Continuous

Amount:  The ROTC Scholarship pays Full-tuition, $1,200 for books, and a monthly stipend.

Whether you're a college-bound high school student or already attending a college or university, Army ROTC has scholarships available.  Scholarships are awarded based on a student's merit and grades, not financial need.

Army ROTC offers two, three, and four-year scholarship options based on the time remaining to complete your degree.

+ Ohio Army National Guard

Application Deadline:  Continuous

Amount:  $16,488 per year in Federal and State Tuition Benefits plus a monthly benefit of $317 provided by the Montgomery GI Bill for full-time enrollment.

In the Ohio Army National Guard you can serve part-time, one weekend per month and two weeks in the summer, and let the Guard pay for your college expenses.

Up to $20,000 in Student Loan Repayment benefits are also available.

+ Point Foundation

Amount:  Various amounts

The Point Foundation provides financial support, leadership training, mentoring and hope to meritorious students who are marginalized due to sexual orientation, gender identify and/or gender expression.

+ AES Engineers

Application Deadline:  October 6, 2009

Amount:  $ 500

The consulting firm of AES Engineers is committed to continue its support of higher education by providing scholarships to deserving students.

Our belief is that achieving a high grade point average should not be the only criteria for determing who deserves to be helped.  For that reason we are offering a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by evaluating the essays that are submitted.

Eligibility:

  • Need to answer one of the essay questions located on AES website.

+ U.S. Department of Homeland Security

Application Deadline:  As early as January 5, 2009

Amount: Up to Full Tuition plus a monthly stipend

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is offering generous scholarships and stipends for undergraduate education as well as summer internships and summer research programs.

To be eligible, you must:

  • You must be a U.S. citizen as of the application deadline.
  • If you have earned a bachelor’s degree as of the application deadline, you are ineligible.
  • You must have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.30 or higher on a 4.00 scale, averaged over all U.S. institutions attended, including fall 2008 grades if enrolled during that term.
  • You must be majoring in a homeland security science, technology, engineering or mathematics (HS-STEM) field which is a STEM field with coursework and/or research relevant to a homeland security research area.
  • If you have been attending college full-time, you must be in your second year of college attendance as of the application deadline.
  • If you have attended college on a part-time basis, or a combination of part-time and full-time, since completing high school, you must have completed a total of at least 45 but no more than 60 semester hours (60 to 75 quarter hours) as of the application deadline.
  • If you have any commitments such as active military service, a co-op program, or study abroad that would prevent you from attending school full-time, attending the fall 2009 DHS HS-STEM Career Development Conference and participating full-time in a 10-week internship during the summer of 2010, or completing the homeland security service requirement following receipt of your degree, you are ineligible.

Applications will be evaluated by a review panel of scientists and engineers who are experts in one or more of the chosen fields. The evaluation will be based on the student's academic record, submitted test scores, reference reports, and essays. Reviewers will provide an overall rating and a separate rating on each of the following:

  • Academic Record
  • Reference Reports
  • SAT or ACT Test Scores (self-reported on your electronic application)Research Experience Essay
  • Current Research Interests Essay
  • Homeland Security Service Essay

+ Institute for Humane Studies

Application Deadline:  As early as December 31, 2009

Amount:  Up to $12,000

The Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason University is now accepting applications for scholarships, fellowships and paid internships

Fellowships of up to $12,000 will be awarded to undergraduate juniors and seniors or full-time graduate students who have a clearly demonstrated interest in the intellectual and institutional foundations of a free society.

Film and Fiction Scholarships of up to $10,000 will be awarded to students pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree who share an appreciation for the potential and promise of a free society.

+ National Science Foundation

Amount:  Up to $40,500 per year

The National Science Foundation is now accepting applications for over 1,000 fellowships in the Graduate Research Fellowship Program. 

Applicants must be U.S. Citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens, and at or near the beginning of graduate studies in an NSF-supported field:

+ Abbott and Fenner Scholarship Program

Application Deadline: June 19, 2010

Amount: $1,000

Abbott & Fenner Business Consultants is offering scholarships for the 2010-2011 academic year.  Scholarships are available to all high school juniors and seniors as well as all students currently registered in any accredited post secondary institution between the ages of 16 and 30.
