What are Endowed Funds and Capital Projects?

Gifts to endowment and capital projects play a vital role in ensuring that Denison remains one of the country's premier independent liberal arts colleges.

Endowed funds may be established for a variety of purposes. These include providing scholarships to help Denison attract talented and well-rounded students, rewarding excellent teaching by a member of the faculty, supporting the use of technology at Denison, or helping the college in a variety of ways.

Gifts to Denison's endowment are managed by a team of investors to maximize total return, without undue risk. At the present time, five percent of the average market value of each endowed fund for the past three years is allocated to the budget.

In addition to endowment gifts, there are opportunities to fund Capital Projects. Examples include the spectacular Campus Common, a grassy, central outdoor gathering space for the Denison community with underground parking that restores the pedestrian nature of the central campus. The Common is framed by two new buildings:

  • Samson Talbot Hall is a state-of-the-art center for biological sciences that features modern classrooms and a rooftop greenhouse to strengthen biology teaching and research.

  • The Burton D. Morgan Center is the campus's new central hub, with technology-rich classrooms, a video-conference amphitheater, and multi-purpose meeting spaces to bring together students, alumni and faculty.
