NEW BUSINESS:

* As a result of the academic secretary orientation held a few weeks ago, a couple of issues concerning performance reviews came up.  Where do evaluations go when completed?  Does the Provost read the academic secretaries review?  Is there a process to have feedback after they have been reviewed by the Provost?   What recourse do employees have to when chairs make remarks and submit the evaluation without the employee’s feedback?  Who reads it?   Barbara communicated to the group that the performance review is signed by the manager and employee, the Vice President or Provost, and then HR where the review is stored.  Barbara conveyed that the Provost does read the reviews, and if feedback from the Provost is requested that it should be discussed in the review.  This question comes with concern when faculty who are responsible for evaluating staff don’t take the time to provide a forum of discussion.  In this instance, an employee did not have a chance to review with the supervisor remarks/comments made by the supervisor, and the evaluation was submitted without discussion.  Barbara stated that she does read and sign off on the performance reviews received in HR.  Also, reviews not discussed with employees are done incorrectly.

* Can 9-month employees be paid over a 12-month period if an employee wanted it?  Barbara stated no.  She stated that administratively this would be a time-consuming process, and that some things would have to change in order for us to do it.  Aside from that, Barbara stated that the great majority of SOS are hourly employees, not salaried, which impacts how we do business.

OLD BUSINESS:
* Part-time HRAG representative. The group discussed and determined that a vote of all part-time employees would render a new representative.    Barbara informed the group that they could self-determine a representative.  The group felt it democratic to have employees vote.

* SOS Banquet. Some concern still brewing over the date and location of the banquet.  The consensus of the group is that most staff want the event held off campus so that everyone can attend.  This has come up before.  It is more expensive to rent a hall and have it catered by an organization other than Sodexho.  Also, we have been encouraged to have these type of events at the college so that Sodexho is involved.

The next HRAG meeting will be November 7, 2007 in Burton Morgan Room 317.
