Barbara welcomed the group back, and provided an overview of what the group’s role is while serving on the HRAG.

OLD BUSINESS:
o Question from October 2007 – Can 9 month hourly employees be paid over a 12 month period?  The response in October 2007 was no.  Barbara reiterated that the University has to pay hourly employees by the hour, not as salaried employees are paid.  The work of an hourly employee is predicated on the number of hours that they actually work.  Again, the response to the question is no.  A support staff employee can not be paid over 12 months.

o Tuition Benefit.  Was it the decision of the Board of Trustees that dependent must attend a 4 year accredited college to be eligible for the tuition benefit?  Although Barbara wasn’t sure, she asked the Director of Human Resources who indicated that the benefit was originally designed such that a dependent must attend a 4 year accredited school.  In 2006, the change in benefit amount (from $1,500 to $3,000) did not include a change to two-year accredited colleges.  The Director of Human Resources indicated that he would look into the matter.

HR UPDATES:
o Health Plan 2009 - RFP.  Barbara told the group that the Personnel Committee, Finance Committee and the HRAG chair was present to hear presentations from 4 healthcare carriers over the summer.  She indicated that from those the committees narrowed it down to two carriers to consider (Aetna and UHC).  She further stated that HR would be conducting references on the two carriers and will make a determination later on in the month.

The next HRAG meeting will be October 1, 2008 in Burton Morgan Room 317.
