The Board discussed in detail the configuration and management of Denison's Internet connections. There are four "T1" lines to the Internet at this time, each capable of providing 1.5 million bits per second of data coming in or going out. Thus, Denison has a total capacity of 6 million bits per second for connections to the Internet. This connectivity is distributed throughout the campus, to residence halls, academic buildings, faculty and staff offices, and more. Usually, these connections to the Internet are at or near the saturation level (fully consumed by incoming or outbound traffic). Usage data over time can be seen graphically. When the fourth "T1" line was added earlier this semester, it was saturated with uses within minutes of being connected.
The Board also discussed ways of ensuring that these important network resources are being used in ways that are consistent with the University's mission. This subject will be revisited again in January when IRAB resumes its fortnightly meeting schedule.
