I. Student fee for Denison On Line:

This $75 fee covers the costs of students' connections to the campus network and the Microsoft Campus Software licensing for students. It was recommended that the fee continue for the 2000-2001 fiscal year because these important programs will continue. More than 1,200 students are taking advantage of Denison On Line this year.

II. Computing equipment budget for 2000:

Departmental requests are in and the first draft of the equipment budget was circulated. Computing Services staff are estimating both capital costs and staffing required on a per-project basis as part of the assessment of what can be done this year. Resources may be sufficient to complete about half of the projects on the list so far. Not included are costs of new initiatives such as expanded use of the Ohio Five network or matching funds for curricular proposals.

III. Remote access modems:

Can and should Denison provide dial-in access for faculty and staff? It would be costly for Denison to provide Internet services through dial-in modems, and given that OARnet is considering ways to provide dial-in access on a state-wide basis, now is probably not the time to make a move in this area. The Board discussed the possibility of polling the campus about their needs for dial-in access through the University.

IV. Provision of "non-public" computing access via the campus network in the Sigma Chi facility:

The local Sigma Chi chapter has requested network services for a small cluster of computers as well as some distributed computers in the Sigma Chi lodge. Difficulties arise in balancing the need for network security and technical support for non-public computing. After significant discussions, the Board proposed that nomad ports be installed in the lodge, and that the fraternity contract privately with student network consultants that work for Computing Services for their technical support. The usual $75 per port charge would be levied as is the case for Denison On Line ports, but if the computing facility in the lodge were made fully accessible to the Denison community, the per port fee could be waived.

V. Panel on Information Technology for the Board of Trustees:

Provost Anderson mentioned the possibility of a special presentation on information technology that could be convened at an upcoming meeting of the Denison Board of Trustees. Such a presentation would focus on the changing information culture at Denison and might include panelists from Computing Services, the faculty, students, OhioLINK, Cisco and others.
