I. IRAB Teaching subcommittee on teaching with IT

A. Proposal (2) instead of hiring an external person to help faculty have a rotating position among Denison Faculty who actually use IT serve as help for other faculty.
B. Proposal (3) IT skills should be part of the FYS curriculum and this should include such issues as ethics.
C. Concern was expressed that hardware is getting ahead of teaching.
D. Student training - other ideas
1. Joe Fleming mentioned possibility of a summer camp that could be sold to students.
2. Area specific workshops
3. Workshops to provide minimal experience before turning students loose in the labs.
4. This should be introduced into the discussion of the GE requirements as a possible technology component.
5. What about skills appropriate to the major? Is there a difference between basic skills for life and "major based" needs?
II. Low Hanging Fruit Subcommittee
A. Portals and Web Interfaces.
1. Step one Administrative Computing is moving forward with the Banner - web interface for students.
2. Doug and Janell have contributed to what are the characteristics of portals necessary for us. Review of some portals has taken place.
a. CNAV - Gettysburg College
b. Blackboard
c. Oracle - portal
d. UPortal
3. Should we buy off the shelf? This question is an over simplification. Some for example Oracle and U Portal are shells you develop.
4. Portals may come up on our computer screens by the end of next year - though we may not have much content on campus.
5. Portal rollout can happen in stages. It may be a "long process of evolution."
6. The Portal should allow a single log-in to get you through to all services.
7. Currently only those people with OARnet connections can reach the U and S drives.
B. Calendar
1. Programs under consideration are Meeting Maker and Corporate Time.
2. Corporate Time seems to give more flexibility.
3. Roll out of this will be later this spring.
4. A test is going on with access to the Novell drives
5. Announcement will be in a matter of weeks.
III. Acceptable Use Policy Group
A. A new draft set of principles is ready and under review by the subcommittee members. Comments should be incorporated by next Friday.
B. The revised draft will be presented at the next IRAB meeting
C. There has been as attempt to ground the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) in principles.
D. 18 schools use the Ohio State AUP.
IV. Napster use has been controlled by "Packeteer"

V. Yahoo internet survey of the "Nation's most wired Campuses."

A. Computing Services advises that we shouldn't participate
B. Many CLAC Colleges are signing a pledge not to participate
C. Agreement was reached that if other CLAC Colleges didn't participate we wouldn't either.
VI. Broadcast e-mail
A. Denison prohibits the use of broadcast e-mail. Computing Services does not produce e-mail distribution lists.
B. Results of a survey of other institutions
1. 12 had published guidelines
2. 15 control by community practices
3. 3 allowed no lists
4. Scott will send the results of his survey to IRAB members
5. This issue will be discussed at the next meeting.
VII. First estimate of the computing budget was passed out. Please review. Refer any questions to Joe. Background papers are available in a notebook. If you wish to see them ask Joe Fleming.
