ITAC
September 19, 2000
Provost David Anderson reviewed the IRAB charter in the Faculty Handbook, noting that the Board is here to help with policies and resource allocations, and to provide advice on the "big issues" in technology. David asked the Board for their current definitions of big issues.
* acceptable use policies
* broadcast e-mail and gatekeeping of e-mail lists
* privacy policies
* 24 hour 7 day support services, and support in the Library
* skills for liberal arts graduates
* instructional spaces
* pairing librarians and IT staff to support the curriculum
* ubiquity of computing, and how to accommodate the 5% of students who do not own a computer
* raising expectations for work beyond the classrooms enhanced by techology
* visions for the staff positions created by the Information Initiative
* convergence of telecommunications: data, voice and video
Provost Anderson summarized the conversations by drawing attention to four categories of our issues: teaching, technology support, policies and information management. At the next meeting, we will hear more about the purpose of the Information Initiative and the "low hanging fruit" projects that we might expect to have completed this academic year.
