Diversity Guide for Denison University

Welcome to Denison University! The three part Diversity Guide that you are reading was initially compiled during the 2008-09 academic year as part of our on-going efforts to help make Denison a more diverse and welcoming community. In recruiting faculty and administrators nationally and internationally, we know that many people will consider applying to Denison who have never visited Granville, Ohio or our beautiful campus. Once I began to compile the Guide, the Human Resources Office asked that the information be made available on their web page for all potential employees of the University. The purpose of this guide is to help everyone considering employment at Denison find out more about the diversity in our community.

In 2006, the general faculty of Denison University passed a resolution on the importance of diversity in the pursuit of a liberal education. In part, that statement says, “Denison is committed to the idea that our community should include people from a wide variety of religious, cultural, ethnic, racial, gender, sexual orientation and socio-economic backgrounds in order to realize the goals of a liberal arts education. Denison University’s commitment to foster a diverse community is central to our mission as a liberal arts college to educate critical thinkers, discerning moral agents and active citizens of a democratic, global society.”  (www.denison.edu/about/diversity)

In the three parts of this Guide, you will find information about people at Denison who represent some of the diversity in our community. The first section includes information about people of color at Denison and some of the organizations that support students, staff, and faculty of color. The second section includes information about gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people at Denison and some of the organizations that support GLBTQ faculty, staff, and students. The third section of the Guide includes information about people of different religious traditions at Denison and some of the organizations that support faculty, staff, and students from those traditions.
