Faculty Handbook 2012 - 2013

D. Internal Review Option

At any point in the process, a full-scale internal review may be requested by the department or program, The Academic Affairs Council, or the Provost. This committee will be selected by the Associate Provost (Kim Coplin)in consultation with the department or program under review. (The Associate Provost will develop a list of candidates for the committee that will be screened by the department.) The committee must be approved by the Chair of Academic Affairs Council. It will be composed of five persons-three faculty and two students. At least one faculty member will be from outside the division; at least one faculty member will be from within the division and will chair the Internal Review Committee; one student will be a major, one a non-major.

The Internal Review Committee will have access to the self-study and the written report of the External Review Committee, and to the departmental response if the request for an internal review occurs subsequent to the production of a departmental response.

The written report of the Internal Review Committee will focus specifically on the issues that led to the request for the formation of the Internal Review Committee.

The report will be provided to the department or program under review, the Academic Affairs Council, and the Denison faculty representative. Like the report of the External Review Committee, it is to be treated as an internal document with limited access to all faculty granted upon request to the Associate Provost. The Associate Provost shall inform the faculty annually of the existence of such reports.

The chair or director of the department or program under review will write a brief response to the report(s). It should include mention of possible changes to be made as a result of the review and significant areas of disagreement, if any, with the report(s). All members of the department or program shall see this response and have an opportunity to supplement it with statements of their own. Copies of the response will be provided to the Academic Affairs Council and the Denison faculty representative on the External Review Committee.

At the completion of the review process, the chair of the department or program and the Denison faculty representative will meet with the Academic Affairs Council to discuss appropriate action to be taken as a result of the review. This group will decide which actions should be initiated by the department or program and which, if any, should be initiated by the Academic Affairs Council or the Administration.
