McGaw Scholarship Application Procedures 2008 (Fine Arts Division)

Denison University offers the McGaw Scholarship to outstanding students of the Fine Arts.  Each year the two best students in the arts in the rising junior (current sophomore) class will be selected to receive a McGaw Scholarship, each in the amount of $5,000.

Each of the five departments—Art, Cinema, Dance, Music, and Theatre—may nominate up to two outstanding students from among the rising junior (current sophomore) majors in that department. A minimum overall GPA of 3.4 is required in order for a student to be eligible for the McGaw Scholarship.

To qualify, an applicant must:

  • be a declared major in one (or more) of the Fine Arts departments: Art, Cinema, Dance, Music, or Theatre; OR
  • be a declared individually designed major (IDM) that incorporates a minimum of two arts departments;
  • be a rising junior (current sophomore);
  • maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.4;
  • be recommended by one of the Fine Arts departments based on artistic merit, grade point average, and leadership qualities.

Step One

Applicants must submit the following by Monday, March 17, 2008, 4:30 pm, to their department of choice:

  • a brief but formal single-spaced cover letter;
  • current resume summarizing the student’s work in all the arts at Denison;
  • a current Denison transcript;
  • an artistic statement (500-1000 words) that addresses five questions of interest to the Fine Arts faculty (as outlined on the Application Form).

These materials should be submitted electronically according to the instructions on the Application Form.  Note: Applicants must check the box that permits the University to attach a copy of the student’s transcript.

Step Two

Each Fine Arts department  determines its own process for selecting up to two candidates. This process will be completed not later than Friday, March 21.

Step Three

Successful departmental candidates will then audition for representatives from the entire division on Friday, March 28, at 4:30 pm in the Burke Recital Hall, Doane Dance Performance Space, and Knapp Hall Gallery Space. Specific instructions will be sent to successful candidates.

Decisions will be announced and students notified by April 4, 2008.
