Over the course of two consecutive days, students considered the road beyond Denison by taking part in the 17th Annual Career Expo and Graduate/Professional School Fair. 

On Wednesday and Thursday, students stopped by the second floor of Slayter Union to meet and greet representatives from approximately 70 graduate/professional schools and 20 companies and organizations. Some students were professionally dressed, carefully deliberating over career opportunities, while others–particularly first years and sophomores–were a bit more casual, simply browsing tables and gathering information for the future. 

“The purpose is to allow our students to network and gain information about internships and full-time opportunities with employers,” explained Ryan Brechbill, Associate Director of Career Services. “We want students to meet professionals in different fields and really learn about the opportunities available.” 

Scott Baird ’12 of Shelby, Ohio hoped the fair would help him land an internship over the summer. “I’m just trying to get my resume out a little bit in hopes of getting a summer internship. I’m trying to get a head start on my future career.”

A senior from Aurora, Colo., Natasha Wright discovered a new, emerging field. “I learned a lot about M.B.A. sustainability programs that was interesting and innovative. I’m really glad schools are looking at the changing times and the need for environmental issues to come about.”

Alumni also play an important role, representing many of the schools and employers that come to campus. Theresa Daniel ’09, a first year student at Ohio Northern University College of Law, returned to Denison to talk to students about the transition to law school. “I make sure to tell them exactly what they are going to experience. Graduating from Denison, I understand what we went through here versus what students will go through in law school.” 

Midway through the second day, Brechbill deemed the fair a success. “The fair is going great. The student turnout has been fantastic. The students are well prepared.  They look great and are representing Denison very, very well.”
