Denison University 2008 Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration
At Denison University, we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy with an event series that spans more than a month. Each year a number of Dr. King’s messages are addressed under a the series titles “The Words and The Music.” In 2008, the theme is “I’m Gonna Sing the Spirit: Women in the Struggle for Civil and Human Rights.
This year’s events have included an opening reception; a performance by The American Spiritual Ensemble, a student production of Ntozake Shange's "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf: A Choreopoem;" a profound breakfast dialogue with two civil-rights era activists; a film series; and a student choral performance.
In addition, this year’s celebration held an extraordinary element. After a challenging fall semester, when incidents of racial and cultural insensitivity caused controversy and tension on campus, the State of Ohio honored Denison’s students, faculty and staff with its first-ever “Dream in Action” award for moving to “direct positive action.”
