GRANVILLE, Ohio—Denison University will join the nation in observing the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance with several events. On Saturday, Sept. 10, the college’s John W. Alford Center for Service Learning will organize Denison students for a clean-up of the Licking River and of the 6th Street Community Gardens. Licking Memorial Hospital will co-sponsor a family movie night featuring the movie “Wall-E,” starting at 8 p.m. on the Fine Arts Quad (240 West Broadway) and will hold free health screenings that evening. Popcorn and games will be provided at this event, which is free and open to the public.

Denison will host a Community Service of Remembrance at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11, in Swasey Chapel (200 Chapel Drive). The service will include a choral performance of Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem with soloists Belinda Andrews-Smith, soprano; Kevin N. Wines, baritone; and Andrew Carlson, violin. The Rev. Mark Orten, director of Religious and Spiritual Life and university chaplain, will officiate. The concert will be followed by short prayers for peace from different world religious traditions and a general invitation to remain and reflect on the nature of service to others, sponsored by the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life and the Alford Center at Denison. People of all faiths and those of no faith are welcome to this service, which is free and open to the public.

Lyn Robertson, associate professor of education and women’s studies, said, “By offering these events, we hope to give our students and our community ways of coming together in reflective action that strengthens our commitment to peace and service.”
