Detroit Trumpeter Dwight Adams Plays with Denison Jazz Ensemble
Date of Event: April 5, 2009
Posted: March 27, 2009
The Denison Jazz Ensemble is excited to be joined by renowned trumpeter Dwight Adams at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 5, in Burke Recital Hall (240 West Broadway). Adams will lead a master class/open rehearsal at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, in Burke Rehearsal Room (240 West Broadway). The concert and master class are both free and open to the public.
Detroit-native Dwight Adams may not have begun his music career early, but he quickly made up for lost time after joining his high school band his junior year and got a gig with a local jazz ensemble at 16. His skills soon landed him a full scholarship to Kentucky State University, where he majored in music education and performance. Adams has been a jazz trumpet instructor at both Ohio State University and Michigan State University, and he’s recorded and toured with such well-known artists as James Carter, Marcus Belgrave, Shawn Wallace, and Rodney Whitaker. He’s also a member of Stevie Wonder’s band.
Several of the pieces that will be featured in Sunday’s performance were commissioned specifically for Adams and the Denison Jazz Ensemble. The Jazz Ensemble performs music ranging from the traditional big band era to contemporary jazz and is directed by saxophonist Pete Mills.
