Posted: February 18, 2010

The New American Music Project is a collaborative project between the Columbus Children’s Choir (CCC) and the Columbus Chamber Music Connection (CMC). Its program features a lecture and concert featuring new compositions. The pre-concert lecture begins at 3:30 p.m., followed by the concert at 4 p.m., on Saturday, March 6, at Denison University’s Burke Hall (240 West Broadway). The lecture and concert are free and open to the public.

The project was developed by Sandra Mathias, artistic director of the CCC and Deborah Price, director of CMC. American composers were asked to write a piece of music for strings and treble voices using text by American poets. The composers include Ching-chu Hu, associate professor of music at Denison. Hu set the text “Pirate Candy” written by Mattie Stepanek, author of “Journey Through Heartsongs.” Bradley Sowash of Worthington, Ohio, set the text “Can’t Resist the Music” written by Columbus Children’s Choir alum Allison Dawson; and Tom Vignieri, music producer of “From the Top,” set the text “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Sara Teasdale.

The project has received support from the Johnstone Fund for New Music.
