Astronomy Public Talk and Observatory Open House at Denison

The Denison University Department of Physics and Astronomy will host a public talk at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, in the Olin Science Lecture Hall (100 Sunset Hill Drive). David Green, a member of the Denison class of 2000, will speak on the solar system and some of the NASA missions that have explored the solar system. Green has worked as a senior nuclear physics instructor for the U.S. Navy and is now a flight operations engineer for the Boeing Company.
If the skies are clear, Swasey Observatory (300 Chapel Drive) will have an open house at 8:30 p.m. immediately after the talk. Jupiter and other objects will be observed.
Denison’s Swasey Observatory opened in 1910. Visitors will use the Warner & Swasey 9” refracting telescope in the observatory’s dome and at least one 8” reflecting telescope set up at ground level. The telescopes will be accessible until 10 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. To confirm observatory hours that afternoon call 740-587-6477, there will be a recorded message if the observatory event is cancelled that night.
