GRANVILLE, Ohio—Former Secretary of State James A. Baker III will lecture at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13, in Denison University’s Swasey Chapel (200 Chapel Drive). The address, titled “Reflections of a Public Servant, an Evening with James A. Baker III,” is sponsored by the Mary Elizabeth Babcock Lectureship in the American Conservative Tradition and is free and open to the public. Baker has served under three U.S. Presidents: Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. Baker has received many awards for his public service, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1991. He released his memoir, “Work Hard, Study…and Keep Out of Politics! Adventures and Lessons from an Unexpected Public Life,” in 2006 and is currently a senior partner in the law firm of Baker Botts.
 
Baker’s record of public service began with his appointment as undersecretary of commerce to President Gerald Ford in 1975. He then served as the 67th Secretary of the Treasury from 1985 to 1988 under President Ronald Reagan. As treasury secretary, he was also chairman of the President’s Economic Policy Council. From January 1989 through August 1992, he served as the nation’s 61st Secretary of State under President George H.W. Bush. During his tenure at the State Department, Baker traveled to 90 foreign countries in the post–Cold War era. Baker’s reflections on those years, “The Politics of Diplomacy,” was published in 1995. Baker concluded his service in the White House as chief of staff and senior counselor to President Bush from August 1992 to January 1993.
 
Baker is honorary chairman of the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University and serves on the board of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
