Posted: September 6, 2004
GRANVILLE --The Denison University Babcock Lecture Series will host former Clinton Administration White House Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers and former Bush Administration Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Torie Clarke for a point counterpoint debate on the upcoming presidential election. This event, set for 8 p.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 21) in Swasey Chapel, is free and open to the public.
Myers was the first woman and youngest person to serve as White House Press Secretary. She was known for her sharp political instincts, sense of humor and ability to explain complex subjects in straightforward language. She is currently a contributing editor to Vanity Fair magazine and a consultant to the NBC television drama, The West Wing. Myers, a 1983 graduate of Santa Clara University, has also worked as a political analyst, commentator and writer and was appointed in 1999 to the California State University Board of Trustees by former California Governor Gray Davis. Myers also spent two years as the liberal co-host of the CNBC talk show Equal Time with conservative co-hosts Mary Matalin and later Bay Buchanan.
Clarke, a graduate of George Washington University, played a leading role in shaping the public understanding of the war on terror, including the development of a program that embedded correspondents with military units during Operation Iraqi Freedom. As Pentagon spokeswoman she accompanied Defense Secretary Rumsfeld on visits to every continent. She has appeared on television in numerous press briefings as well as on programs such as 60 Minutes, Good Morning America and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Clarke has also served as a press secretary for former president George H.W. Bush during his re-election campaign. She has been president of Bozell Eskew advertising and vice-president of the National Cable Telecommunications Association.
