Denison Lecturer Explores Art of Medieval Islamic Societies

The Denison University Goodspeed Lecture Series presents Shahzad Bashir, an associate professor of religion at Carleton College (Minn.), speaking on "Religion and Bodily Boundaries: Explorations in the Art and Literature of Medieval Islamic Societies." The lecture will be at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday (April 5) in the Higley Auditorium (100 Ridge Road) and is free and open to the public.
Widely published on the subject of medieval Islamic societies, Bashir's work on "Faziallah Astarabadi and the Hurufis" will be released in May as part of the series "Makers of the Muslim World" from Oxford's OneWorld Publications. He also has published "Messianic Hopes and Mystical Visions: the Nurbakhshiya Between Medieval and Modern Islam" which is part of a series "Studies in Comparative Religion" published by the University of South Carolina Press.
Bashir has served on the faculties of the College of the Holy Cross (Mass.) and Yale University prior to joining Carleton. He earned his bachelor's degree summa cum laude at Amherst College and a master of arts, master of philosophy and doctorate at Yale University. He has been awarded two National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships in recent years and also was a Mellon Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow.
He is a member of the American Academy of Religion, the Association for the Study of Persianate Societies, the Middle East Studies Association, the Middle East Medievalists and the Society for Iranian Studies.
