Battle for Hearing Discussion Scheduled at Denison
Posted: November 28, 2007 / Last Updated: December 2, 2007
The Granville community is invited to a discussion on "The Battle for Hearing" from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 3, in the Burton Morgan Lecture Hall, room 115 (150 Ridge Loop). The discussion will focus on cochlear implants, which are devices that restore sound for people who are deaf or very hard of hearing.
The discussion is inspired by the PBS documentary on deaf culture and cochlear implants entitled "Sound & Fury," and by an article, "The Design and Function of Cochlear Implants," from American Scientist magazine. The session will include a brief viewing of the "Sound & Fury" video, and a discussion will be led by Denison community members who have conducted research with or are parents of children with cochlear implants. Snacks will be provided. The event is open to the public and is cosponsored by Denison's chapter of Sigma Xi (the national science honorary) and NERD (Neuroscience Education & Research at Denison).
