Poet Kwame Dawes to read from his works

GRANVILLE, Ohio—Poet Kwame Dawes will give a reading from his work at 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, in the board room of Denison University’s Barney-Davis building (200 West Loop). This event, co-sponsored by the Beck Lecture Series and the Department of Black Studies, is free and open to the public. Born in Ghana in 1962, Dawes was raised in Jamaica. He writes poetry, fiction, nonfiction and plays. Of his sixteen collections of poetry, his most recent titles include “Duppy Conqueror;” “Wheels;” “Hope’s Hospice;” and “Wisteria,” which was a finalist for the Patterson Memorial Prize. Dawes also has published two novels: “Bivouac” and “She’s Gone,” winner of the 2008 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for Best First Novel. In 2007 he released “A Far Cry from Plymouth Rock: A Personal Narrative.” Fifteen of Dawes’s plays have been produced and he has acted in, directed, or produced several of these productions himself, most recently “One Love” at the Lyric Hammersmith in London.
 
Dawes also is an accomplished storyteller and broadcaster, and was the lead singer in Ujamaa, a reggae band. He is the Glenn Luschei Editor of “Prairie Schooner” literary publication at the University of Nebraska, where he is the Chancellor’s Professor of English.
