Denison University's Beck Lecture Series Fall Lineup

The Beck Lecture Series has been bringing established writers to the Denison University campus since 1962. This fall, six writers are slated to read and discuss their work. All appearances are free and open to the public.
Jill Bialosky and Nancy Zafris are each editors as well as writers. They will speak twice on Tuesday, Sept. 29 in the Barney-Davis Board Room (200 West Loop). At 4 p.m., they will lead a panel discussion on editing and writing, at 8 p.m., they will give a reading of their work. Bialosky is senior editor of the publishers W.W. Norton and is the author of three books of poetry. Zafris is the author of several novels and collections of short fiction and served for 10 years as the fiction editor of The Kenyon Review.
David Baker, professor of English at Denison University, is the author of eight books of poetry. He will read and speak at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13 in the Welsh Hills Room of the Burton D. Morgan Center (150 Ridge Road). Baker's poems and essays have appeared widely in such magazines as The Atlantic Monthly, The New Republic, The New Yorker and many others.
Moustafa Bayoumi, associate professor of English at Brooklyn College, is co-editor of The Edward Said Reader and has published academic essays in several collections. Bayoumi will speak and read at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29 in the Barney-Davis Board Room (200 West Loop).
Kazim Ali teaches creative writing and literature at Oberlin College. He will read and speak at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18 in the Barney-Davis Board Room (200 West Loop). Ali has published several books of poetry.
Don Waters’ fiction has been published in The Kenyon Review. He will read and speak at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8 in the Barney-Davis Board Room (200 West Loop). He has received several awards, including the Pushcart Prize and the Silver Pen Award.
Denison’s Beck Lecture Series was given by Gordon C. Beck in memory of his wife, Harriet Ewens Beck, Denison class of 1910. The series brings established writers to the Denison campus. Harriet E. Beck demonstrated a life-long interest in creative writing.
