Gordon Lecture Series presents ‘Mathemagician’ Art Benjamin

The Denison University Gordon Lecture Series will sponsor an all- campus convocation featuring Dr. Art Benjamin, mathematician and magician, at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12, in the Burton D. Morgan Center lecture hall (150 Ridge Road). Proclaimed as “America’s Best Math Whiz” by Reader’s Digest, Benjamin will discuss “Mathemagics,” explaining and demonstrating how to perform mental calculations faster than a calculator. This convocation is free and open to the public.

Having graduated from John Hopkins University with a Ph.D. in mathematical sciences in 1989, Benjamin is a professor of mathematics at Harvey Mudd College and a professional magician. His research interests include combinatorics, game theory, and number theory. He received the Beckenbach Book Prize from the Mathematical Association of America for his coauthored book “Proofs That Really Count: The Art of Combinatorial Proof” and is currently a coeditor of Math Horizons magazine. Benjamin has appeared on a number of television and radio programs, including National Public Radio, “Today” and CNN.
The convocation is sponsored by the Doris G. Gordon Fund, which is named in memory of former high-school mathematics teacher and friend of Denison University, Doris Gilbert Gordon and her love for mathematics.
