Denison Library Stacks the Tables With 'Books-2-Eat' Creations

Posted: March 26, 2007

Hungry for knowledge? For the fourth consecutive year, you may feed your need to read with the Edible Books Festival at the Denison University Libraries. The creations may be viewed starting at 2:30 p.m. on Monday (April 2) in the Atrium of Doane Library and tea will be served along with the books at 3:30 p.m. A string quartet comprising Denison students will provide music for the event. Everyone is welcome to participate in creating an edible book, or just to come and join in the festivities. "Book" entries must be brought to the library by 2 p.m.

Internationally, the Books-2-Eat festival is in its eighth year. Each entry features works of edible art in the form of books, words, or inspirations from books. Last year the Denison event had such pun-filled entries as "It's a Wonder(bread) Life" (the word 'life' cut out of pieces of bread) and "Ham-LET" (the word 'let' cut out of slices of ham). Other bookish treats included "Charlotte's Web" (a spider shaped cake on a frosting web) and "Peep Show" (marshmallow peeps in sequins and feathers).

The best of show entry in 2006 was Jennifer Knisley's "You can taste a word" composed mainly of chocolate. Easy to make entries are always accepted and often admired for their simple creativity. For the second year, there will be prizes awarded. The categories for 2007 are: Most Creative, Best Presentation; Most "Bookish" and Best of Show.

The rules are simple. All entries must be completely edible and able to be out for an hour or two without refrigeration. If serving pieces are not disposable, the entrant is responsible for taking them away after the event. Anything left will be discarded.
