Posted: October 4, 2008 / Last Updated: November 3, 2008
Bra Art 2008 is a community project and exhibition to promote the use of artwork as activism and raise awareness of breast cancer. The community project to create the bra artwork will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. on two nights: Wednesday, Oct. 15, and Thursday, Oct. 16, in the Doane Library print-making room (400 West Loop). The exhibition, “A Night of 200 Bras,” will be shown at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at a gallery hop that begins in the Doane Library Student Gallery (400 West Loop). Both events are free and open to the public.
The goal of Bra Art 2008 is to involve the entire community with the creation of artwork for the exhibit. Collaboration with the Denison Studio Art Department, Denison Colleges Against Cancer, Denison Women’s Studies, Denison Art Collective, John Alford Center for Service Learning along with the local community, will incorporate many views into the work. Maidenform has generously donated 200 bras for the artwork.
Denison and the local community are invited to create the artwork with donated supplies including paint, material, glue and decorative materials. Artwork is not limited to the provided supplies; artists are welcome to use other materials in their work. Both evenings will include demonstrations and examples of bra artwork.
Denison’s first bra art gallery hop will occur in four locations on the Denison campus that will be revealed at the decorating workshops. The bras will be for sale and donations will be accepted the night of the exhibit. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the American Cancer Society to aid in breast cancer research.
