Denison honors education professor with Brickman Service Award

Karen Graves, associate professor in Denison's department of education, and a member of the faculty since 1993, was honored at today’s Academic Awards Convocation as the new holder of the Charles and Nancy Brickman Distinguished Service Chair.
Denison University President Dale Knobel said of Graves, “The recipient of this year’s award is well known for her continuous service to the college: as multi-term chair of her department; as member of the President’s Advisory Board; as chair of the faculty; as a member of many committees and planning groups; as advocate for faculty and notable citizen of the college; as mentor to students and bridge to the area educational community, and mentor to colleagues on a wide array of issues.”
The Brickman Distinguished Service Chair, established in 1992 by a gift from Charles A. and Nancy Eshelman Brickman, seeks to honor a senior member of the Denison faculty who has excelled in commitment to the university. Charles and Nancy are both members of the Denison class of 1954. Mr. Brickman is a life trustee of Denison and served as chair of the Board of Trustees from 1983 to 1998.
Graves earned a bachelor’s degree (1981), a master’s degree (1988), and a doctorate (1993) in education from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Her areas of expertise include the history of U.S. education, the history of women’s education and secondary education.
