Tom Carroll Sets Recital With Jazz Combo at Denison
Posted: February 19, 2007
Denison faculty member and jazz guitarist Tom Carroll will play an interesting range of music for his next recital, set for 8 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 24) in Burke Recital Hall. The wide-ranging program, which is free and open to the public, will feature the Brazilian dance and rhythm tunes of bossa nova, ballads by American jazz master Duke Ellington and 1940s bebop tunes. Joining Carroll for this concert will be the six student members of the Denison Jazz Combo.
Carroll, who calls this the "year of the guitar," has entertained audiences at a "My Favorite Tunes" recital in September and at the 10th annual Jazz Guitar Festival in November. Carroll has been instructor of guitar at Denison University since 1980. Since 2000 he also has been coordinator of jazz studies. As a teacher he also serves on the faculties of The Ohio State University and Capital University.
Besides leading his own trio, featuring organist Hank Marr, he has played with a wide variety of artists in the world of jazz and entertainment. Some of the jazz artists he has performed with are Louis Bellson, Jack McDuff, Rusty Bryant, Bobby Pierce, Jimmy Heath, Ernie Watts, Frank Foster, Cal Collins, Gene Bertoncini and Howard Alden. He has performed at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, S.C. with Violinist Ola Hanson, at the Mansfield Jazz Festival with the Rusty Bryant/Hank Marr Quartet, the Columbus Jazz and Ribs Fest and Jazz-on-the-Green in Parkersburg, W.V. as well as several I.A.J.E. Conventions with Hank Marr.
His first recording as a leader was, "City Lights," featuring Hank Marr, Gary Carney and Jim Rupp. A live disc was released in spring 2002 and both are available on the COJAZZ label. Tom is also an affiliate artist with the Jazz Arts Group of Columbus.
